A Note to @PimaNews Readers

Because of the COVID-19 crisis, @PimaNews is highlighting recent COVID-19-related policy and procedure changes. The College will revise and update the information as the situation warrants. College leaders are committed to communicating with employees early and often during this uncertain time. However, they realize that the amount of information and details sometimes can be overwhelming.

TLC Seminar on Digital Literacy March 29
The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) hosts a seminar on digital literacy with Sam Wineburg, the Margaret Jacks Professor of Education at Stanford. He will address a big question of our times, “What is it about the Internet that makes smart people spin around in circles?” The event is 1-2:30 p.m., March 29 and is open to the public.

The Internet plays by different rules from the print culture that has shaped our conceptions of reading. Drawing on a national survey with 3,447 high school “digital natives,” along with ethnographic work with Stanford undergraduates, Ph.D. academics, and professional fact-checkers, Wineburg explores what it is about the Internet that has smart people turning around in circles and how we—along with our students—can do better.

Wineburg’s work on digital literacy has been featured in TIME Magazine, The New York Times, NPR, and BBC, and has been translated into dozens of languages.

To register, click here. For more information, please contact Ricardo Castro-Salazar, rsalazar@pima.edu, or Mays Imad, mimad@pima.edu.

Mission Survey Deadline Today; Help Pima Build a New Fulfillment Framework
Pima is re-imagining its Mission Fulfillment Framework, a critical part of the Integrated Planning process. The Framework, which comprises the College’s Purpose, Mission, Behaviors and Vision, was revised most recently in 2016. You have an opportunity to provide insights on the proposed framework, created by Pima’s Strategic Planning Team, by responding to a short survey by today.

You also can contribute to Pima’s strategic planning by attending the remaining sessions of the 2021 Futures Conference, an annual exchange of ideas between Pima students and employees, and community members. This year’s conference is virtual and interactive. Dates and topics for the remaining sessions are:

  • March 22, 9-11 a.m.: Long-term priorities/Achieve 60 Pima County
  • April 16, 9-11 a.m.: Feedback on draft Strategic Plan for 2021-2026

No RSVP needed. The 2021 Futures Conference can be accessed via a PCCTV livestream.

Records Management
Do you need help with records management? In an effort to comply with state and federal record retention requirements, Pima is promoting a records purge week April 5-9.

The purging process covers:

  • an inventory of your records in file cabinets and shared drives
  • reference to the approved Department File Plan or the Arizona State Library Retention Schedules for disposition and storage guidelines
  • getting assistance with storing and disposing of records by submitting an IT Service Request for Information Management > Records Management
