English Proficiency

Accepted exams and scores

International students who wish to be admitted into an academic program of study at Pima Community College must satisfy the requirements for English language proficiency.

Below you will find various exams and scores that we will consider for admission:

  1. Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 90, directly sent from Duolingo.
  2. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report with a minimum score of 61 ibt.
  3. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Overall Band Score of 5.5 or better with a minimum individual score of 5.0 in EACH component (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).
  4. Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic or Express: a minimum score of 43, equivalent to CEFR Level B1
  5. General Test of English Communication (GTEC) Score of 1050 or better.
  6. ACT Reading and Writing with a minimum score of 19.
  7. SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing with a minimum score of 510.
  8. Successful completion of the English course in the Cambridge General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) or General Certificate of Education (GCE) O Level or higher with a grade of C or better.
  9. LanguageCert Academic with a minimum score of 60.
  10. Unofficial transcripts indicating completion of WRT 101 English Composition I or equivalent at a regionally accredited institution and earning a grade of C or better. To transfer your credits to Pima, an official transcript must be sent to the Registrar's Office for evaluation.
  11. Unofficial high school transcripts indicating completion of regular English classes with a C or higher at a(n):
    • Accredited American or International Baccalaureate (IB) high school, or
    • High school in an English-speaking country, or
    • High school in a non-English speaking country that uses English as the primary language of instruction (proof of English instruction required)
  12. Completion of ESL088 WG and ESL088 RV with a grade of C or better.

English proficiency test results expire after two years from test date. The list above is subject to change without notice. For most updated information, please contact international@pima.edu.
