If you’ve ever dreamed of working on airplanes, Pima’s Aviation Technology Program is the place to start. You’ll train with real aircraft — including Boeing 727s — at our high-tech Aviation Technology Center on the grounds of Tucson International Airport.

Start with a certificate, work toward your associate degree, and get ready for takeoff in an exciting, well-paying career in aviation! Get hands-on experience working on everything from small private planes to big passenger jets. You’ll learn how to inspect, fix and maintain aircraft — skills that are in high demand in Southern Arizona’s fast-growing aviation industry.

With Pima’s Aviation Technology programs, you can confidently prepare for a career maintaining and repairing aircraft in roles such as FAA-certified Aircraft Mechanic (A&P), Avionics Technician, Structural Repair, Nondestructive Testing & more.

Degrees & Certificates

At Pima, our programs are designed to help you build your skills as you go. Start with foundational certificates and advance to higher-level and/or specialized certificates and a two-year degree, all while gaining the hands-on experience needed for in-demand careers.

Certificate, Aircraft General Mechanics

The courses in this 32-week program are for high school students enrolled through Pima JTED - Joint Technical Education District and will qualify you to work as a panel technician in an aircraft facility. Immerse yourself in this hands-on training in our year-round course schedule.

Certificate, Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics

You’ll build on the skills you developed in the Aircraft General Mechanics certificate courses. Because these courses are taught per the FAA’s Federal Aviation Regulations Part 147 for FAA Aviation Maintenance Technician schools, completing them means you’ll be qualified for FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification.

In this specialized program, you’ll get an intensive semester of advanced training on how to inspect, assemble and repair sheet metal and composite structures.

Certificate, Avionics Technician

Expand on your Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics[TBA link] knowledge and skills to master a broad range of topics necessary to work with aircraft electronics. You’ll earn 28 credits completing a sequence of short-term courses in our Aviation Technology Center avionics lab.

Learn how to inspect, test and evaluate parts and systems using the six core methods widely used across the aviation and aerospace industries.

Build upon your formal training received in the Nondestructive Testing Certificate, and build on-the-job training hours toward your Penetrant Testing Level II certification to jumpstart your career in NDT.

Associate of Applied Science, Aviation Technology

After completion of the Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics Certificate continue your education with Pima’s Aviation Technology AAS and be able to confidently enter the workforce with comprehensive knowledge in aircraft repair and maintenance.

Your Classroom: A 727 Hangar

At Pima, you’ll train in the huge 97,000+ square-foot Aviation Technology Center, packed with everything you need to get real hands-on experience. You’ll work on 21 actual aircraft, including three Boeing 727s, two regional jets, and a mix of general aviation planes.

The center has two full-size hangars, a modern tool crib, 10 classrooms and 10 specialized labs — all designed to help you build the skills you’ll use on the job in the aviation industry.

Choose Pima’s Aviation Technology Program and you’ll be studying at one of the most respected and dynamic programs in the country. Most of our students graduate with a job at one of the dozens of maintenance, repair and overhaul companies with facilities in Tucson, including Ascent Aviation Services, Bombardier, MHIRJ and SkyWest Airlines.
