Working with an Advisor

To stay on track with your program of study, you should meet with an advisor at least once each semester.

The printable Academic Advising Syllabus (PDF) helps you prepare for working with an advisor. It

  • explains the advising process.
  • gives you a plan on what you need to know on each step of the way toward completing a program.
  • gives you an organizer to record your meetings with advisors.

Building your Class Schedule

Academic advisors can help you:

  • Choose a program of study.
  • Choose the classes that you need to complete your chosen program.
  • Figure out how many credits to take each semester based on your personal situation.
  • Register for required classes.
  • Make changes as the semester progresses.

Advisors also can tell you what will happen to you if you add, drop or withdraw from classes, which affects your:

  • Financial aid
  • Student status
  • Athletic eligibility.

If you’re unsure what program of study meets your goals, an advisor can help you figure it out.
