Pima Community College Receives $634,000 Gift to Establish James C. Wyant Optics Technician Program
TUCSON, AZ - Pima Community College (PCC) is expanding opportunities for students pursuing careers in optics thanks to a $634,000 gift from the family of Dr. James C. Wyant, a pioneering figure in optical sciences and longtime leader at the University of Arizona.
The investment will establish the James C. Wyant Optics Technician Program within PCC's Applied Technology Division. The College's Governing Board approved the naming of the program during its regular meeting on Wednesday, November 4.
The contribution will help equip a state-of-the-art Optics Laboratory at PCC's Downtown Campus, located within the Center of Excellence in Applied Technology. Funding will also support student scholarships, specialized equipment and faculty stipends, providing students with hands-on training and the technical skills needed to pursue careers in the optics industry.
“This generous investment will create meaningful opportunities for our students while strengthening Southern Arizona's growing optics industry,” said Dr. Jeffrey P. Nasse, Chancellor of Pima Community College. “Dr. Wyant's contributions to optics and education have had a lasting impact on our community. We are honored to carry that legacy forward by preparing the next generation of skilled professionals who will help shape the future of this important industry.”
The program will prepare students for high-wage careers as optics technicians while providing opportunities for those interested in continuing their education at the University of Arizona's James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences.
“Jim believed deeply in the power of education to open doors and create opportunities. He also understood that a strong optics industry needs talented people with a wide range of skills and educational backgrounds,” said Tammy and Clair Wyant in a joint statement. “We are pleased to partner with Pima Community College and the Connie Hillman Family Foundation to establish a program that reflects those beliefs and carries forward Jim’s commitment to optics, education and the community.”
Dr. Wyant has played a significant role in establishing Tucson as a center for optics research, education and innovation. He joined the University of Arizona in 1974 and later served as the founding dean of its College of Optical Sciences. An accomplished researcher, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Wyant co-founded WYKO Corporation and 4D Technology and has received numerous honors for his contributions to the field. In 2019, the University renamed its College of Optical Sciences in his honor, and in 2023, he received an honorary doctorate recognizing his contributions to science, education and the optics industry.
The investment reflects PCC's continued commitment to expanding access to affordable, high-quality education and preparing a skilled workforce to meet the evolving needs of Southern Arizona's technology industries.
