Pima Dance Takes the Stage with “Lift,” a Bold Celebration of Movement and Music
“Lift” celebrates the diversity of dance genres taught at the College
Tucson, Arizona – Pima Dance will electrify audiences with “Lift,” a dynamic showcase featuring original works by students, faculty and guest choreographers, on May 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. in Pima Community College’s Proscenium Theatre.
Directed by new dance lead Julie Andrews, M.F.A., “Lift” celebrates the diversity of dance genres taught at the College. This collection of faculty, guest and student work shows how the arts lift our communities through shared celebrations of movement and music.
Highlights of the Program
Faculty and Guest Works:
- Julie Andrews, M.F.A., presents her Jazz piece “Everything Old is New Again” an homage to great choreographers who have added to rich theater dance traditions.
- Elena Hernandez, M.A., entertains us with multiple Folklorico pieces highlighting regional music and styles from Mexico’s states.
- Claire Hancock, M.F.A., shares new works in ballet, modern and contemporary, with “Threshold,” a new work featuring a series of dance solos inspired by still imagery from recent Pima Art exhibits. She uses chance procedures and constricted space to create intimate movement snapshots, including “Cu Plăcere,” a ballet suite for 10 dancers set to Béla Bartók’s “Romanian Folk Dances” performed live on the piano by Lawrence Nash, and “Liminal Spaces,” a narrative ballet drama choreographed to Tucson composer Bryce Cravatzo’s string quartet of the same name. It tells the story of a family changed by war.
- Guest choreographer Cris Barajas debuts a new hip hop piece to electrify the stage.
- Pima’s own Dance Team and Dance Club will perform members’ original works in hip-hop, contemporary, jazz and disco.
Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the exceptional talent and diverse artistry of Pima’s dancers and choreographers.
