Pima’s Fall Music Series Features Nine Student Concerts, Dec. 1-14

Tucson, Arizona - Pima Community College’s Music Department invites the community to enjoy its Fall Music Series, a lineup of nine concerts featuring student groups performing many different styles of music. These concerts highlight a full semester of hard work, creativity, and teamwork from our music students and faculty.

From upbeat jazz and powerful chorale pieces to classical orchestra works, mariachi, and musical theatre, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. All concerts are open to the public, and we welcome families, students, and the Tucson community to come out and support our student musicians.

Fall Concert Series Schedule

Monday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. – Percussion Ensemble

Travel back 100 years and experience the xylophone like you’ve never heard it before.

The PCC Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Trevor Barroero, pays tribute to the legendary “Golden Age of the Xylophone” with virtuosic works by G.H. Green, Bob Becker, William Bolcom, Charlie Owen and more, featuring marimbas, vibraphones, glockenspiels, sirens, drums and an entire arsenal of classic percussion colors. The evening concludes with a one-of-a-kind performance: a live score to Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid projected on screen and performed in real time. Admission is FREE!

Wednesday, Dec 4 at 7 p.m. – String Ensemble

Under the direction of Fang Fang Li, this concert highlights the expressive power of string music. Blending classical repertoire with contemporary selections, the ensemble delivers performances rich in harmony and artistry.

Monday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. – Jazz Ensemble

Directed by Scott Black, enjoy the smooth sounds of the Pima Jazz Ensemble. This concert brings together timeless jazz standards and contemporary arrangements that let student soloists shine. The ensemble emphasizes improvisation, tight ensemble work and dynamic expression, delivering an evening full of rhythm, soul and spontaneity. Jazz lovers won’t want to miss this high-energy celebration of America’s original art form.

Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. – Musical Theatre Workshop

Directed by Dennis Tamblyn, enjoy this spirited showcase from the Musical Theatre Workshop. Students will present scenes and musical numbers from well-known Broadway shows, combining acting, singing, and movement in a performance filled with drama, humor, and heart. This performance is a celebration of creativity and collaboration, giving students a chance to shine in the spotlight and give audiences a glimpse into the world of musical theatre.

Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. – Concert Band

The Pima Concert Band will present its Fall/Winter Concert on Thursday Dec. 11, 2025. The Band will present holiday classics, a classic from the “Wind Band Literature” and two wonderful arrangements of music from Broadway. The theme for this entire year is “A Return to Broadway”. Come enjoy the work of this excellent ensemble, directed by Victor Valenzuela.

Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. – Mariachi Ensemble

Experience the color and culture of traditional Mexican music with Mariachi Azteca de Pima College. With a spirited blend of vocals, strings and trumpets, this student ensemble performs a lively program celebrating the heritage of mariachi. This concert offers an authentic and passionate tribute to folkloric music, rooted in community, storytelling and heartfelt performance. Directed by Salvador Gallegos.

Saturday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. – Orchestra

Directed by Anne Grimes, D.M.A., the Pima College Orchestra showcases the beauty and complexity of symphonic music in this afternoon performance. Blending string, woodwind, brass and percussion sections, the orchestra presents a selection of pieces from classical masters and modern composers alike. Unique selections include a Bach concerto movement, Csárdás, Nutcracker favorites, highlights from the Broadway musical “Phantom of the Opera,” “Chicken Run,” “Origins” featuring the didgeridoo and more!

Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. – Guitar Ensemble

The Pima Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Michael Lich, will perform works for voice and guitar, small ensemble and guitar orchestra. The program will feature “Music for a While” by Francesco Di Giandomenico and Onk Akimel and “Landscape” by Luc Lévesque. The evening’s performance will also include arrangements of popular songs by Enya and Paul Simon. This will be an enchanting evening of guitar music.

Sunday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. – Chorale & College Singers

Two choral groups come together for a moving and uplifting concert that celebrates the power of the human voice. Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Ng, Pima Chorale & College Singers will perform famous folk songs “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” (Churchill); “Shenandoah” (Newbury); vocal quartet - “O Magnum Mysterium" (Victoria). The select mixed-voice a cappella ensemble College Singers will present part-songs – “Do Not Be Afraid” (Stopford), jazz favorite “Autumn Leaves” (Carter), English madrigal - “The Little White Hen” (Vautor) and Christmas carol - “Gaudete” (Chilcott). For the final section of the concert, women chorus - “Who Can Sail Without the Wind” and “Gaujas Meita Rotataja (Ešenvalds); Chorale & College Singers will join together again to perform “You Do Not Walk Alone” (Hagenberg), Chinese folk song “Mo-Li-Hua” (Woo), “O Salutaris Hostia” (Ešenvalds), all time favorite “Over the Rainbow” (Turner), “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” (Moore) and Christmas carol “Sussex Carol” (Chilcott).
