Pima Dance 'Pulse' Explores Energy and Expression, May 2 -3
Tucson, Arizona – Experience an electrifying evening of dance as Pima Dance presents “Pulse” 7 p.m., May 2-3 at Pima Community College’s Proscenium Theatre. This dynamic showcase features original works by students, faculty, and guest choreographers that were developed throughout the spring semester. “Pulse” director and faculty member Jillian Peterson and guest choreographers Connie Salgado and Kenzie Jean debut pieces that highlight the ensemble’s versatility. Tucson’s Esperanza Dance Project also contributes a featured work, created in collaboration with Pima students. Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of movement and creativity!
This semester, Pima Dance Ensemble students have had the amazing opportunity to work with Esperanza Dance Project, directed by Beth Braun. Esperanza Dance Project is a community-based collaboration established in 2011 that uses dance performances to educate about the issue of childhood sexual trauma, and deliver a message of hope, strength, and empowerment. Cast member Julian Prieto says the process has been fun but challenging. “This piece is incredibly energetic — it’s full of running and big, sharp movements,” says Prieto. “It’s a huge contrast to the more flowy, rolling modern pieces I’ve done in the past, and it really pushes me in a new way.”
This semester’s program features “Burn the Floor,” a high-energy jazz piece by guest choreographer Kenzie Jean. Set to “Burn” by Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, the work fuses classic jazz technique with modern theatrical flair, showcasing each dancer’s individuality through sharp transitions, intricate formations, and vibrant musicality. Also featured is a stunning folklórico piece by guest artist Connie Salgado, celebrating rich cultural traditions with bold, expressive movement. Rounding out the program is a crowd favorite from last season — a lively Bollywood piece choreographed by Jillian Peterson, set to a dynamic medley of South Indian chart-toppers.
Pima Dance allows students to perform, choreograph and participate in a wide range of dance experiences. The Dance Ensemble produces two concerts annually. Pima Dance offers technique classes in ballet, jazz, modern, and folklórico. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Pima Dance Ensemble, Pima Dance Club, and Pima Theater productions.
