2024-2025 Pima Arts Season Unveils a Dynamic Celebration of Creativity and Cultural Diversity

Tucson, Arizona - Pima Community College is excited to announce the 2024-2025 Pima Arts Season, a dynamic celebration of cultural diversity, innovation and artistic excellence. Spanning exhibitions, performances and showcases across multiple disciplines, the season promises to engage and inspire audiences with a rich array of visual arts, theater, dance, music and fashion. From thought-provoking gallery exhibits at the Louis Carlos Bernal Gallery to captivating theater performances, vibrant dance showcases and concerts, this season highlights the creative talents of Pima’s students and faculty while fostering deeper connections through the arts.

Neda Contreras - Paintings

September 3 - January 9, 2025
Reception: October 2, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Neda Contreras’s oil paintings blend whimsical beach scenes with skeletons, and lowrider scenes depicting the society and culture in the Southwest, rooted in Mexican Folk Art traditions. Her works, from playful portraits inspired by iconic Surrealist artists to ex-voto pieces reflecting gratitude, use rich earth tones and layered oils, inviting viewers to smile and reflect on her unique narratives.

Night Skies: Astrophotography, Michael Cox

January 13 - August 20, 2025
Reception: January 29, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Explore the wonders of the cosmos through the captivating astrophotography of Michael Cox, a Tucson-based photographer and Pima Community College graduate with more than 25 years of experience. Michael currently runs the SkyLab on Mount Lemmon and University of Arizona telescopes. Combining his technical background with a passion for the night sky, Cox includes digital images of deep space objects and chemical platinotypes using platinum, palladium and iridium, offering a stunning glimpse into the universe.

“Preserving Bernal’s Legacy” celebrates the influential work of Louis Carlos Bernal and the talents of Pima Community College’s faculty and alumni photographers. Featuring diverse perspectives works by Louis Carlos Bernal are shown along with those who followed him after his tragic fatal accident, from Ann Simmons-Myers’ “Bikers” series to Pam Golden’s images of the Tohono O’odham Nation border, this exhibit honors Bernal’s lasting impact while showcasing the vibrant cultural narratives of Tucson.

“I|AM : Muxe's, S/He, Him, Family” is an exhibit that celebrates trans culture through the works of both historical and contemporary artists from the United States and Mexico. Featuring photography by Graciela Iturbide, Vittorio D’Onofri, Liz Cohen and Jess T. Dugan, alongside the poetry of TC Tolbert, the exhibit explores diverse perspectives on gender identity. It highlights historical views from Mexico and modern expressions of trans identities today, aiming to humanize and celebrate individuals who have transcended societal boundaries.

Reprieve - Dana Roes Paintings

January 27 - March 7, 2025

The Bernal Gallery proudly presents an exhibit featuring the artwork of Dana Roes, Pima’s esteemed Dean of Arts, from January 27 through March 7. This captivating showcase includes Roes’ paintings from the past 10 years to her latest abstract paintings, which delve into psychological and material spaces, exploring themes of voids, transition and the coexistence of various modes of existence. Known for her abstract and semi-representational paintings, Roes invites viewers to find comfort in ambiguity and the spaces in between. Her acclaimed career includes an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, a Fulbright Grant, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, numerous prestigious awards and international exhibitions. This event promises an enriching experience of Roes’ thought-provoking and evocative work.

2025 Annual Juried Student Exhibition

This annual exhibition brings together the jurors’ selections of the best work by student artists produced during the Summer and Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters from all of Pima Community College’s campuses. Jurors: TBA

Muerte - Mom Series, Michael Cajero, Drawings

September 30 - November 1
Reception: October 29, 1-3 p.m.

“Muerte - Mom Series” by Michael Cajero presents a striking collection of drawings that delve into themes of life, death and the poignant relationship between mother and child. Known for his work in Arte Povera and Process Museum, Cajero infuses these drawings with the raw emotionality and ephemeral quality characteristic of his assemblage sculptures. By merging bold lines and fragmented forms, Cajero creates powerful, evocative pieces that reflect his deep connection to Mexican folklore and social commentary, inviting viewers to explore the complexities of human existence and mortality.

Never Don’t Pay Attention - Louise Serpa: Rodeo Photography

February 10 - March 28, 2025
Reception: February 11, 1-3 p.m.

Explore the dynamic world of rodeo through the lens of Louise Serpa, a trailblazing photographer who captured the sport’s raw energy for nearly 50 years. This exhibition features Serpa’s groundbreaking images, from her pioneering access to the rodeo arena to her intimate portraits and action shots. Her career, which began as a self-taught passion in the 1950s, includes iconic coverage of events from the Tucson Rodeo to international showcases. Discover Serpa’s unique perspective and enduring legacy in this compelling collection of her most celebrated work.

Southern Arizona Arts Guild

Experience the creative essence of the Southern Arizona Arts Guild (SAAG) through this exciting exhibit. Contemplations - Student Art Exhibition

Experience the annual student exhibit at the Art Gallery @ Downtown Campus. “Contemplations” features an impressive collection of paintings and drawings created by talented Pima art students. This exhibit provides a platform for these budding artists to showcase their work and creative growth. Directed by Maryann Green and adapted from Bram Stoker’s novel by Meg O’Connor, this suspenseful play follows young Jonathan Harker as he teams up with renowned professor Annika VanHelsing and others to confront a malevolent ancient vampire preying on the patients and staff of a local asylum. As they delve deeper into the mystery, they face terrifying challenges and must devise a plan to stop the vampire before it’s too late.

Wandless: Power Beyond Spells

Dive into the magical world of “Wandless: Power Beyond Spells,” directed by Samantha Cormier. This original play, crafted by Pima Theater students, follows a group of campers who uncover extraordinary abilities within themselves. As they navigate the trials of summer camp, they must unite to thwart the sinister plans of the enchantress Cordelia, who seeks to steal their newfound powers. With thrilling encounters, heartfelt moments and a touch of humor, the play celebrates the power of friendship and self-belief, revealing that true magic lies in courage and unity.

The Wedding Singer - The Musical Comedy

Get ready to relive the ’80s in all its glory with “The Wedding Singer,” a musical comedy directed and choreographed by the talented Simone Jolivet-Manuel, with Chris Will as assistant director and Mickey Nugent as assistant choreographer. Featuring the vibrant music of Matthew Sklar and catchy lyrics by Chad Beguelin, along with a book by Tim Herlihy and Beguelin, this delightful show is based on the beloved 1998 film. Follow the hilarious and heartfelt journey of Robbie Hart, a wedding singer who, after being left at the altar, finds new hope and romance with waitress Julia Sullivan. With its energetic score and charming story, “The Wedding Singer” promises a night of unforgettable fun and feel-good moments. Don’t miss out on this joyous celebration of love, laughter and the magic of the ’80s! 

Borderline

“Borderline,” directed by Julian Cardenas and written by Andrew Sianez-De La O, is a captivating theater show. Set in the old cotton fields of Socorro, Texas, the play intertwines ghost stories with the real-life challenges faced by children living on the border. Two young storytellers and two secret-keepers must
confront a menacing creature in the desert, relying on each other and the voice of the repentant Tío Ofelio to survive. Through made-up myths, stories of the past and a rendition of La Llorona, they face and seek to overcome the very real monster stalking the borderlands.

Michael Lich, Guitar, Faculty Recital

Experience a captivating evening of classical guitar music performed by Pima’s guitar faculty Michael Lich. His program will feature his transcription of J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 6, an original composition entitled Suite No. 2 for Guitar and Roland Dyens’s Libra Sonatine. Lich also will perform works by Couperin, Bogdanovic and Ritenour.

Fall and Spring Music Showcase

Piano Day

Piano Day offers an opportunity to treat your ears to captivating performances by a diverse array of piano faculty, talented students and accomplished alumni. Piano Day this year will feature music of French composers, including Debussy works for piano solos, piano duets and two pianos, four-hands. 

Percussion Ensemble

The Pima Community College Percussion Ensemble, directed by Trevor Barroero, D.M.A., will perform an exciting and diverse array of traditional and contemporary percussion ensemble repertoire, utilizing more than two dozen different instruments, including marimbas, xylophones, vibraphones, snare drums, cymbals and hand drums. These performances are certain to be exhilarating for audience members of all ages and backgrounds. 

Jazz Ensemble

Under the direction of Scott Black, the concert features jazz standards performed from a variety of periods in big band style. 

Concert Band

Under the direction of Victor Valenzuela, the ensemble will perform classics for a full band, along with small wind and percussion ensembles and soloists. 

Mariachi Ensemble

Mariachi Azteca de Pima College, led by our new director Salvador Gallegos, will perform mariachi standards along with modern compositions, including Mexican variations and styles of the Son, Ranchera, Huasteca and Bolero. 

Orchestra

Under the direction of Anne Grimes, D.M.A., the Pima Orchestra brings together violins, wind instruments, brass, strings and percussion to perform a mix of classical and modern pieces.

Under the direction of Michael Lich, the ensemble, as well as soloists, perform a mix of classical and contemporary repertoire on classical guitars.

Immerse yourself in the enchanting melodies of the Chorale & College Singers concert, directed by Jonathan Ng, D.M.A. With a diverse repertoire, these performances feature a grand mixed-voice choir and an a capella ensemble.

Guitar Orchestra Festival

Jillian Peterson leads Pima Dance in delivering captivating performances throughout the year. The Spring Fashion Show promises to be an awe-inspiring event, featuring the incredible creations of talented students, alongside the impressive fashion brands of alumni and class collections. Notably, the show will shine a spotlight on the highly anticipated fashion upcycling project in collaboration with Goodwill Industries and feature designs using cutting-edge technology in the apparel industry and digital textile printing.
