Welding and Fabrication Technology
Due to high demand and strict laboratory capacity limits (maximum of 12 students per lab section for safety and equipment availability), Pima Community College's Welding & Fabrication Technology programs utilize a managed registration request process starting with Spring registration. When the course schedule opens for an upcoming semester, students must submit the WLD Student Registration Request Form to request placement in welding courses.
Why We Are Implementing This System & How It Benefits You
The Welding Department Head, Faculty, and Staff are confident that the Priority Registration System will streamline course planning, create a fair and transparent enrollment process, and ensure that career-focused and degree-seeking students get access to the required courses they need to graduate on time and begin their welding careers. This process eliminates barriers for degree- and certificate-seeking students, ensures clear priorities based on academic progress, and simplifies your pathway from admission to graduation.
Key Dates & Deadlines: Refer to the official College Key Dates & Deadlines calendar.
- Form Live Window: Opens Friday, Oct. 9, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. and closes Friday, Oct. 30, 2026 at 8:00 a.m.
- Roster Processing & Registration: The Welding Department team will process selections and manually register approved students into their selected CRNs during the week of November 9, 2026.
Step-by-Step Student Registration Instructions
To request placement in upcoming WLD courses, complete the following required steps prior to the closing of the registration request window:
- Schedule & Meet with Academic Advising: Meet with Catie Cromwell via Meet My Advisor or Student Services prior to submitting your request to review your My Degree Plan and confirm required course sequencing. (Note: Students will not be registered unless they have verified degree planning with an advisor).
- Clear Holds & Prerequisite Overrides: Resolve all registration holds and submit any prerequisite override or credit via Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) requests in advance on the PCC PLA Resource Page before submitting.
- Maintain Academic Standing & Attendance: Prior academic performance, including Attendance History and overall grades/GPA in prior WLD or prerequisite courses (consult Academic Standing Policies), will be strictly evaluated during final roster selection.
- Select WLD Course CRNs: Review the official Schedule of Classes (WLD) when it opens and record your 5-digit Course Record Numbers (CRNs) in order of preference.
- Submit the WLD Registration Request Form: Access and submit the WLD Student Registration Request Form between October 9 at 8:00 AM and October 30 at 8:00 AM.
- Provide Accurate Form Information: Ensure all required fields are complete, including
- Student Full Name & A-Number
- Official Pima Student Email Address (Non-Pima emails will NOT be processed)
- Target Semester
- Date of Advising Meeting regarding My Degree Plan
- Requested Course WLD CRNs (in order of priority)
- Enrollment Status (Full-Time vs. Part-Time)
- Urgency Rating / Reason for Registration (Scale 1–3)
- Time-Sensitive Funding Status (e.g., GI Bill / VA Benefits, active scholarships)
- Documentation/Proof for prerequisite overrides or PLA, if applicable
Selection & Prioritization Rubric
All submitted requests for each WLD course section are ranked using a standardized 3-tier priority structure to select enrolled students (up to 12 per section; 24 for WLD 115) and establish official waitlists:
| Priority Level | Category | Criteria |
|---|---|---|
|
Priority 3 (Highest) |
Declared AAS Major / Certificate Seeker |
Students with a declared major in Welding & Fabrication (AAS) or stackable Welding Certificates (Basic Certificate or Fabrication Certificate) who require the course for degree completion. Must be verified with advising. |
|
Priority 2 |
Career Advancement |
Students seeking skill upgrading or professional certifications for current or upcoming industry employment. |
|
Priority 1 |
Personal Interest |
Non-degree seeking students taking courses for personal enrichment or general interest. |
Secondary Tie-Breaker Criteria
When multiple students fall within the same priority level, course seats are assigned based on the following secondary factors in order:
- Graduation Status: Students in their final semester requiring the specific course to graduate receive immediate preference.
- Academic Standing & Attendance: Verification of strong Attendance History (70%+ lecture attendance required) and Academic Standing in prior coursework.
- Time-Sensitive Tuition Funding: Verification of military/VA GI Bill benefits or active scholarships requiring time-bound enrollment.
- Advising Verification Date: Completion and verified date of advising meeting to review My Degree Plan.
- Submission Timestamp: Date and time order of Google Form submission.
Important Reminders & Next Steps
- WLD Courses Only: The WLD Registration Request Form is strictly for Welding (WLD) prefix courses. Students are responsible for self-registering for general education and non-WLD technical courses (e.g., MAC, CAD, BCT, GTM, GTW) through the standard student portal.
- Automatic/Departmental Registration: Selected students will be registered directly into their approved CRNs by the department administrative team during the week of November 9. Notifications will be sent out via Pima email.
- Waitlist Management: Students who are not selected in the initial top cohort will be placed on the official section waitlist and notified if seats open up.
- Handbook & Program Website: For complete program rules, course details, and lab policies, review the PCC Welding Program webpages and the PCC Welding Technology Student Handbook.
- Students who miss the first 2 days of class will be dropped from the WLD course and the spot given to the next student on the waitlist.
