Residency Requirements
The Registrar Office must determine your legal residency before you can register and pay fees for any semester or session.
Responsibility: It is the student's responsibility to indicate the correct residency status when applying for admission and registering for classes. Domicile is determined as of the first day of the session in which a student is attending that semester.
Change in status: Students requesting a change to their residency status must submit a Residency Correction Form and supporting documentation to any campus Student Services Center or via the Registrar File Upload located on MyPima > Students >Register and Pay.
In-State Tuition: Students seeking in-state tuition must also complete a one-time Verification of Lawful Presence Form.
Guidelines
In order to qualify for the In-State Tuition rate, you must be able to demonstrate all of the following:
- Physical presence in Arizona for 12 consecutive months prior to the start of classes
- Exceptions to this policy (such as active duty military) are listed on the Residency Correction Form
- Intent to remain an Arizona resident
- Financial independence:
- This means you provide more than half of your own financial support OR you are 23 or younger and are supported by a parent(s) that are Arizona residents
If you are not identified as an in-state resident on your initial application, you may need to submit the Residency Correction Form. It will provide a list of appropriate documents to submit and must be submitted by the first day of class for which the change is requested.
If you have identified as resident non-citizen and request in state tuition under proposition 308 that was passed and signed into law on December 5, 2022, please use this Residency Non-Citizen Form.
State Statutes
Guidelines that are used to determine residency status are taken from the Arizona Revised Statutes Sections 15-1801 through 15-1807.
NOTE - With the passage of Proposition 308 in November 2022, students who graduated from an Arizona high school and spent two or more years attending an in-state high school now qualify for in-state tuition regardless of citizenship or immigration status (provided all other residency requirements are met.) Similar provisions are in place for students who were homeschooled or who obtained a G.E.D. More details and FAQs are available at Proposition 308, under Paying for College.
