Refugee from Burundi named Commencement Speaker

April 12, 2018

Jean Mfuranzima, a refugee from Burundi who is a candidate to receive an Associate of Arts – Liberal Arts Degree and an Arizona General Education Curriculum-Arts (AGEC-A) certification, is Commencement Speaker for Pima Community College’s 2018 Graduation Ceremony on May 17.

Five years ago, Mfuranzima fled Burundi, a small country in East Africa, and secured political asylum in the United States.

“One lesson that Tucson has taught me . . . is that in the middle of chaos, trials and death, life has a way of working itself out through education,” he said.

Mfuranzima also will be a guest speaker at PCC’s Multicultural Convocation on May 4.
