I'm finally remembering to do it on my own. I might be able to take the training wheels of next... next year. [laughs] Welcome to senate everyone... I'm so happy to see all of you here. I'm still admitting people in, so if I take my eyes off of you for just a moment, that's what I'm doing. I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer break... hopefully you didn't work too hard... or if you did work, that it was on something that you enjoy doing... hopefully. Is that how we're feeling? And hopefully everyone was able to... you know... they were a part of a meeting that they enjoyed and collaborated and came up with some good stuff. It's a day full of meetings isn't it? Let's agree to that. Well, we saved the best for last... alright... the 4 o'clock meeting senators... hoorah. Our agenda for today is pretty light, and that's for 2 reasons... the first one is, it's our first meeting... we're just getting back. We know that you're busy with a lot of things going on... but also, we just have an hour for this first meeting. So, it's... you know... it's lite for that reason as well... I do realize that I shared the agenda with all of you earlier. I am... I have 3 wonderful screens right in front of me... and I'm trying to pull up the agenda on one of them, while I'm still admitting others into into the meeting... so, you guys can see my juggling act here as I'm getting to that. So, why don't we go ahead and start as we always do... in chat? Just entering who you are, what division you are representing... and if you are a senator or a guest or administrator. Okay, we have quite a few that are in... I don't see... I think it's slowing down... so, that's wonderful. I do see that everyone is introducing themselves by chat... so, thank you. I provided a link to the agenda in chat. If you cannot see it I'll go ahead and provide it again... there you go... and then, Brooke, I'm gonna ask you to go ahead and take that over. if you wouldn't mind sharing it, if more people come in after this... I would appreciate that. ---Brooke Anderson: I'm sorry, Rita... I was looking down and not paying attention... did you say, share the agenda? ---Rita Lennon: Yeah... if more people are admitted afterwords... could you share the agenda one or 2 more times? ---Brooke Anderson: Sure, absolutely. Thank you. ---Rita Lennon: Okay, so the Google sign-in sheet has been shared... I'll ask Sarah... If you wouldn't mind sharing that one or 2 more times. That way we can get a true account of everyone who has attended. We're also... in chat box, we are telling everyone who we... are we're introducing ourselves. I would ask that you introduce yourself with your full name, the area or division that you represent, and then if you are a Senator or a guest. Rita... it's Dolores... I just wanted to let you know Ariana is here and she's taking minutes. Wonderful... thank you so much... [Dolores] you're welcome... [Rita] "Thanks Ariana... so happy to have you here." Okay, so we are couple minutes behind... so, we'll go ahead and begin. That was introductions... welcome and introductions... so happy to have you guys here. Happy to be back from summer, I mean, who wants time off? [sarcastic laugh] Let's get to work... hopefully you're not too fatigue with all the meetings. But, like I said earlier, we saved the best for last... so, we're gonna go ahead and get going here. The first thing that we have, after welcome and introductions are... any requests for agenda modifications... or a request for executive session. I see hands coming up... so, Makyla. ---Makyla Hays: Yeah... I would put on the agenda for our classification compensation update. ---Rita Lennon: Absolutely... okay... so, we can definitely do that... I will put you in after Brooks information. 0:04:45.968,0:04:52.590 So, we're going to talk about that afterwards... is that okay? 0:04:52.590,0:04:53.759 Sounds good. [laughs with Rita] 0:04:53.759,0:04:59.666 Okay... I don't know who I was asking but thank you for answering... wonderful. 0:04:59.666,0:05:12.563 Any other agenda modifications or requests for executive session? 0:05:12.563,0:05:21.116 Okay, great... are there any requests for open forum or short announcements? 0:05:21.116,0:05:24.632 So, this is the time... if you're new to us... if you're a new senator... 0:05:24.632,0:05:30.398 this is the time where you can make a short announcement about anything going on in your area. 0:05:30.398,0:05:32.971 Maybe you want to give a plug to a new course. 0:05:32.971,0:05:44.750 You have a new committee that you're starting and you want you need... you need people for the committee... anything like that. ---Sarah Jansen: I'd like to mention that there are 2 new philosophy courses that Pima is running this fall, and I think there's links in the agenda to them. But existential philosophy... and then a global philosophy course, called Wisdom of the World. And if you have any questions, I'll just put my email in the chat, and if you know any students who are interested, just send them my way... thanks. ---Rita Lennon: Thank you... and I do want to let you know that Eric also mentioned that there was a new course in their area... 0:06:18.730,0:06:27.466 and I'm so sorry... I did not get the opportunity to share the link... as, like all of you, I was in meetings all day long. 0:06:27.466,0:06:35.805 So, Maggie, I saw your head bounce up and down... would you like to talk about that LIT course. ---Maggie Golston: Yeah... it's a new literature course... it's an on... we're trying it online first... and it's Literature and the Environment. It has all kinds of interesting texts that we're gonna read and study... and the teacher is one of our finest... Dr. Eric Aldrich. ---Rita Lennon: Thank you... very cool... awesome... okay.... so, any other short announcements or open forums? 0:07:08.534,0:07:15.289 Okay, not hearing any... we'll go ahead and move on to the next step... which is the approval of May 22 meeting minutes. 0:07:15.289,0:07:22.191 And actually, this is going to have to happen via email... and just senators will receive the meeting minutes. 0:07:22.191,0:07:31.303 Ariana was wonderful, you know... over the summer, we meant ... best intentions were to finalize those meeting minutes and get them to you all. 0:07:31.303,0:07:39.624 We didn't do that... so, I'll send those out to Senators via email and just have you vote that way... okay, to approve them 0:07:39.624,0:07:47.801 And then we'll just amend the meeting minutes for today, once I have the vote from all of you. 0:07:47.801,0:07:52.532 Any concern or questions about that? 0:07:52.532,0:07:58.952 Oh, and Kate, you have something you'd like to share with us... Kate, go ahead and just share that. [unintelligible] ---Kate Schmidt: Yeah... it's quick... Dolores mentioned earlier... she's challenging everybody to learn student names. We know one of the best ways to learn their names is to make table tents. The faculty services and resource centers has scrap paper and markers, so you can pick that up and make table tense for in your classes... a little how-to video may be attached. ---Rita Lennon: Nice... thank you.... so, in-person classes will benefit from that for sure... very cool... okay. Our first speaker this afternoon is the chancellor... I don't know if he has arrived just yet... so, let me take a quick look... I don't believe he has. Yes, Joe, we will put that into chat here in just a moment... so, Joe Brewer was asking for the sign-in sheet. So, Sarah, I'll ask you to take care of that for me... I'd appreciate that, thank you so much. Okay... so, it's not quite 4:15... let's... let's talk about... we'll wing It... let's talk about everybody's meetings today. Was there anything about the meetings that you all were interested in? Or questions about... concerns about... anything like that... we'll just open up the mics. Oh, yeah, thanks... thanks, guys... thanks for leaving me hanging... oh... Javier... thank you for coming to my rescue... please go ahead. ---Xavier Segura: Thank you, Rita... in one of my meetings today we had actually discussed some pedagogical practices, implementing DEI as well. So, for instance, not only getting to be familiar with your students names, but also incorporating their pronouns. So, introducing yourself... hello, my name is Xavier Segura... my pronouns are he, him, his, and "el". And to also just be considerate of that whenever you you are introducing yourself to your courses. As well, let's take it in consideration your students pronouns as well. ---Rita Lennon: That's phenomenal... I love that... and then my apologies for mispronouncing your name. So, thank you... very nice... anyone else? Now you're all just gonna leave me hanging... I can start singing... I could do this if you want... I'm not a singer, but I'll definitely wing it. Anybody else want to bring up anything? Please... come on. Okay, then, what we can do is we can go ahead and move on to the provost message... If you're okay with that Provost? ---Dolores Duran-Cerda: Absolutely... I'd be happy to... welcome everybody. And again, it's great to see all of you... today has been tiring with all the meetings, but at the same time it's been energizing for me to see all of you... be it in person... be it virtually online. So... thank you... and if it's an exciting time as we start the semester. And I remember getting butterflies in the first day of classes... and also, using table tents for for names. And to me that was so important that we... and for everybody, of course... but, welcome to the new academic year. It started out with a bang, I think, with faculty last weekend, for the teaching strategies workshop, that was wonderful, and it was at the same time as one of the super Saturdays... it was like... I think there have been 3 or 4 Saturdays in a row... there have been 200 people... students... potential students, you know, in line... and so, we're excited to see the enrollment go up. Also, this past week... thank you Kate and Diane Miller and others... and Valerie Vineyard... who coordinated the Faculty Learning Academy, and the Department Head, Discipline Coordinators Meetings. I think those have been really helpful... the Department Heads and Discipline Coordinators Meetings. We used to have them on a yearly basis, and then it kind of faded away... but I'm so glad we brought them back. And I think it helps to have resources available and just sharing thoughts and ideas as we move forward... all of us in academics. And the new faculty... welcoming the the new faculty on board... so, we're very proud of them as well. I want to take a moment to say hello and to welcome the new senators... how many senate... new senators do we have Rita? Do we know? ---Rita Lennon: Brooke, Would you help me out with that information? If you have that at the top of your brain. [chuckles] ---Brook Anderson: [chuckles too] I don't have a count right off the top of my head, but we do have half of our divisions with their new seats today, And... yeah... so, we'll be... right... I think it's about 20... about... ---Rita Lennon: Wow... well, then why don't we do a formal... Provost if you don't mind, we'll go ahead and have you... why don't you raise your hand or put your thumbs up if you are new to senate or returning... Maggie, yeah... you're returning to us. ---Dolores Duran-Cerda: Oh, that's great a lot of people... wonderful. ---Rita Lennon: Welcome. ---Dolores Duran-Cerda: This is a wonderful... you will find it to be a wonderful experience... to share ideas, to share concerns, to move agenda pieces forward regarding academics or anything really and thank you for the officers for your leadership, Rita and others here... so, thank you for that. Also, I wanted to announce that I'm bringing back my office hours... but they're going to be hybrid... they used to be only virtual... well, they first were all in person, and now... and then virtual... but now, Hybrid, because as you know, it's hard to drive back and forth to different campuses... so, I'll be at a designated campus. But you can join me either in person or virtually... so, I'll be sending out more information about that regarding the dates and the times that you can sign up for. And I'm bringing back a Café con Leche... and since Dr. Mitchell is no longer here, Kate will be joining me... so, Kate and I will be having our Café con Leche session... so, please come in and pop in. No need to register ahead of time. but I'll send you the dates and and times that you can say hello or share any new ideas or any questions you may have. I'll be continuing with the provost reports, coming to senate, and also sending them out as an email. But I know several of you have thought... well, you know, who exactly is under the provost... what units report to the provost? So, Adriana has been helping me in creating an ORG chart, and I don't know... Rita, is there a moment of time to share the ORG chart really quickly? If not, I can send... I'll send it out anyway to you... to share with the senators. But I'll just show a quick peak, so you can take a look. ---Rita Lennon: Absolutely, I think you should have share screen capabilities. ---Dolores Duran-Cerda: Yeah... I think it's... do you see it? Is it coming up? ---Rita Lennon: Yes, it's in... ---Dolores Duran-Cerda: And it's interactive, so you can click on links? But you can see here... who are my direct reports, and then... so, we have the deans, for now... they used to be under the vice provost... there will be a vice provost... there's going to be a national search, hopefully starting in the fall. But for now the Deans are reporting to me... and who knows? Maybe I'll have them continue reporting to me because it's been a wonderful experience. But if you click on "Deans," then you can see the various units... so, with this one... I can't see to the top... how do you hide this bar? Hmm... anyway... so, what's here? And then, if we go to the next slide... I'm sorry... I'm not as good as all of you in this... maybe this is good there... maybe this way is better. [chuckles] So I'll just share, you know, the various units... and it'll be interactive... and you can see who's there if you need to reach them. So, you don't have to go looking through the website. Who reports to whom? What are the various areas? And there are some links here to the website as well. Here's some more colleagues, etc... I'm going really fast, just to give you an idea as to what's... what is... what it consists of... the provost or chart, because I know, it's moving and evolving. But, anyway... so, that's just a sneak peak... I'll stop sharing... and I'll send this to Rita... and Rita... you can, if you don't mind please, sharing it with the Senators... and I've shared it with the Deans too... so hopefully, they'll be sharing it with their respective divisions as well. But I hope that will be helpful for communication and understanding who is in the provost office... but Adriana worked on that... so, thank you, Adriana. Thank you. [unintelligible] sorry. Absolutely... and then the last thing is just, thank you for doing what you're doing. It is a time for innovation and opportunities, and really thinking outside of the box regarding academics, and how we can improve ourselves and our teaching or pedagogy... to better serve our students. But at this same time, I want to emphasize our culture of care and dignity, and honoring humanity. So, just keep that in mind as we are creative and innovative... the humanity aspects of ourselves, each other... being respectful and collaborative, which you all are... which we all are... but just to continue that... and to take care of yourselves on... at all levels. So... thank you very much... and that will do it for me... thank you. ---Rita Lennon: Wonderful... thank you... I still have't seen the Chancellor come through... let me just double-check... maybe I missed him. Nope... I don't see him. I'll text him. Okay, sure. ---Courtney Webb: Rita? ---Rita Lennon: Yes... Courtney... yes. ---Courtney Webb: I'd like to do a shoutout to Sean Mendoza and Sarah Jensen, for their help on during the 2-tiered project and implementing that... it's now gone through successfully. And thank you very much for all your work, which has gone on for a long time... so, thank you. [unintelligible] ---Rita Lennon: Thank you. ---Dolores Duran-Cerda: Absolutely. [claps] ---Sarah Jansen: I just want... I just wanted to say, there were definitely others involved as well... Lynn Maners and Kate Schmidt in the Provost office, of course. So, it was the entire AERC... it was definitely a team effort but thank you so much... ---Sean Mendoza: But what about David Bea? ---Sarah Jansen: But of course David Bea... [laughing] but thank you. ---Rita Lennon: That is good... thank you. ---Kate Schmidt: There have been some minor kinks with that system... so, there's... on the letter there's an an inquiry form link, if you have any questions about it, we do urge people to to fill out the form, if they've got concerns about where they ended up. ---Sean Mendoza: I know... and really... please... encourage your adjunct faculty to join in our adjunct faculty meetings... because all that information is there. You know, we provide... you know. feedback, AERC provides, you know, some direction and some feedback to what it is, or you know, the direction that we're going. So, please encourage them to attend every Fri... actually, not every Friday, but the first Friday of every month... that'd be really great... thank you. ---Rita Lennon: All right... very nice... all right, so this is a usually we're a little bit... we try to be a little more formal, we're not formal in any way, shape or form, but we try to follow Robert's Rules of Order, where the presenter who is on the agenda has the floor. If there's any... you know... any questions that you have about what they are presenting, or the content that they are discussing... then we raise our hands, and we're called upon. It's... so, just for do senators is why, I'm sharing this information. So, we don't usually just have conversations going on but this is our first meeting... we're all excited to be back... we're all really excited to to collaborate. So, just know that I'm... we're good with it this time... but, we try to follow a little bit more orderly fashion, come next month. So, thank you... okay... we're gonna go ahead. and move on, then, 0:20:53.992,0:21:01.838 to the president's welcome and remarks... since I don't still see the the chancellor here. 0:21:01.838,0:21:05.730 I know that the provost was gonna go ahead and try and get in touch with him... so we'll do that. So, I don't have too much to share... I do want to... the first thing I wanna ask is, do we want to stay virtual? So, this is a question for senators... I see Sean's head... watch it, Sean... you you might give yourself a headache. [laughing] I see that he is emphatically excited to stay virtual. I think that we could go ahead and do a formal vote... we'll take it by chat. So, I see that a couple of you have already added your thoughts... and your votes there. So, go ahead and please, if you are a senator, go ahead and please answer. If you would like to continue to stay virtual, please go ahead and answer "yes"... and if you want to go back into in-person meetings at... we can figure that out... the logistics of that out... then please say "no." So "yes," for virtual... "no," for in-person. We... I saw just quickly, someone said about Chat... we actually voted on this for last semester. We had not yet voted on it for this upcoming semester Alright, I'm gonna challenge those who are saying "maybe" or "abstain." Does that... does that mean that you don't care which way it goes? Or does that mean you don't have an opinion one way or the other? Okay. [laughs] John knew I was calling him out... okay... so, correct... you don't really care which way it goes... okay. [chuckles] I've corrected your... your vote Brooke. Okay, you don't miss the time spent passing the mike... [chuckling] Okay, what I see... I didn't do a count... so, anybody in... Makyla, I see your eyes on me. It... the majority of... the majority of votes that I've seen come through on chat are yeses... like I said, I didn't do a true count, so, I won't make it official... but at this point in the meeting... I can bet that we're gonna probably assume that... it's... we're gonna stay virtual. So, we'll go ahead... before we move into the next semester... we'll double-check with everyone... make sure that we still want to stay virtual for the coming semester... but we had not yet voted for that with the senate. Okay, the next thing that I wanted to share with you is that we have in Pima.edu... and I'm just gonna share my screen... and that's the other beauty of virtual, right... is, we can share screen as much as we need to. And looks in my... yup... I'm sharing it... okay. So part of our responsibilities for everyone who works here... in our missions... in history... yeah... missions and history. We have our vision and we have our mission. We also have this one section called Behaviors, where we... it spells choices where we commit to equity and social justice... we have frank, open conversations... we are open to change... and endeavor to serve. We focus on innovation... challenge our processes and assumptions.... we evaluate our effectiveness... and I am just giving you the reader's digest version of this... and our philosophy is service. So, I do want to let you know that I'm going to be sending out a survey to all of you that... it really just starts to, you know, starts to collect information on this, like... how are we doing in senate around our behaviors... how do you feel your division is doing? And then also, how do you feel the institution is... as a whole... for academics? And you know, because Senate is really focused on academic matters, so, as for curriculum... anything that has to do with our curriculum, changes our curriculum... our content, what do we achieve... teach... all of those things... how do you feel that we're doing? And I'm just giving, you know... I'm verbalizing it here... but in the survey it will be a lot more precise. So, just know that that will be coming out here in the next couple of days... so, focusing on our behaviors. One of the behaviors that we have are the responsibilities... I should say... that we have as senators... is that we're supposed to disseminate this information and give it out to our team... our team is our division. So, you know... a lot of our divisions and departments have multiple... I'll stop sharing that here for a second. And we have multiple senators who are representing our area. So it's important, as Brooke is going to share... that we are working with our division in our department, senators, to determine how that's going to happen. But I just wanted to remind you that that's part of our responsibility is to make sure that our team... our division... is aware of what's going on... what we're meeting about. Also, that you're looking at agendas and sharing that you're getting their feelings... you know... their concerns about the topics that we're going to be talking about. And I know... Brooke... I'm really stepping all over what you're going to talk about. So, I promise you I'll stop talking about it... but I just wanted to share that with you that I would like for you to hold yourselves a little bit more accountable, and ensure that you are reaching out to your officers... I'm sorry... your department and division on a regular basis. The other thing I wanted to talk bout real quick is that... you know, there's been lots of different initiatives that have come down the pipeline... 0:27:07.000,0:27:13.239 if you were in either... in the Department Head meeting or the Discipline Coordinator meeting earlier this week. There are quite a few things that were discussed, and you know, we were given overviews about. And so I did want to share that... you know, some of the things that... some of the stuff we'll be talking about in upcoming Senator meetings. But also... we're gonna probably have to focus a little bit of our study sessions on these as well. So, my goal is to not just say it in one meeting, but to share it, you know, by email... to do it in a senate meeting... to do it in our study sessions... but try to get this information out as much as we possibly can, especially, as we're moving forward with these timelines and these initiatives. But also, as... if you were in those meetings you heard me say... one of my biggest concerned is our ability to serve as in a shared governance focus or philosophy... and I don't think we're quite there as an institution. We have a lot of work to do... you know, there's lots of departments that affect our ability to teach... our ability to do our job... and I'm sorry, I'm tripping all over my tongue, but I've been talking all day. [chuckles] So, one of the things that we need to do is, we need to be invited to the table as soon as something is dreamed... or an initiative is thought of... or a policy is changing... faculty needs to be contacted at that moment... we need to... everyone who's thinking about... oh, we need to make a policy around this, or we need to create this, or we need to have an initiative about this. They need to say... oh, wait! Who are our stakeholders? Step back, and... you know, Tal's in the room... I think Josie's in the room. This is stuff that they started years and years ago... there was the Heads Up Initiative that Tal... I think I'm good butchering the name but you know that was something that I remember Tal was part of. And... all of these things have been going on for years and yet we're still at this point, where we're hearing about an initiative at the end, instead of at the beginning, and being told... well, this needs to be done by march 20, 23... when really, we should have been at the table at the beginning, deciding on how this should be rolled out. So, just letting you know that I'm still gonna fight that good fight... and make sure that we're here... that things aren't being rolled out without us at the table discussing these things. I realize that there's some times where changes are happening... and are occurring... and we can't wait. But when we can, we should be.... we should be there... we should be discussing these things right alongside... it's just... it's respectful. And a lot of the people in these roles have taught before... so, they know that this is important and it's very... you know we're passionate about this. So, just letting you know that I'm gonna continue to have those conversations with everyone... and sometimes they'll be fiery... and sometimes they'll be passionate... but they'll always... they'll always be there, and really... that's all I wanted to talk about so far. So, I'm gonna turn ...let's see... I'm gonna try and see if our Chancellor has arrived. ---Dolores Duran-Cerda: Rita, it's Dolores... so, I texted with him he's on a tour with Senator Kelly at the Downtown Campus, and then Aviation... but I don't think he knew about about the meeting today. ---Rita Lennon: Hmm... I don't know... I've been talking to Gabby about this for a while now... so, they knew that he was supposed to be here. Okay, I'm sorry. Me, too... I know that the senators had a lot, you know, that they wanted to talk to him about. So... okay... well, moving on... we'll go ahead and go on to the Vice-President's welcome and remarks. ---Brooke Anderson: Thank you, Rita... welcome everyone... as Dolores kind of started out... we have new Senators here in a lot of our divisions, with our 2022-2024 senate seats, newly elected last spring... and welcome to your first senate meeting... for those of you who are brand new... and to those of you who are serving another term in your divisions... in those areas. Thank you so much for your continued service. So I sent out an email to all of you who are starting your first fresh new term... and those of you who might be continuing in those roles. With just some reminders about things and updates, because I know that joining a group like this can be a little overwhelming, and there's a lot going on. And so I have wanted to kind of continue some of the conversations we've had in the past about mentoring for senators, and setting clear guidelines and responsibilities... so that, people know how to be active and involved in the senate and they understand what's happening. So, I hope that was a helpful email... I'm here if you have any questions... and I'm also, as you'll see on the agenda here... I really want to make sure that new faculty... especially brand, brand new faculty... are paired with some other senator, who's got experience. Someone that you know you could reach out to and ask questions. You know this... this, I think, was a little easier when we were in person, than virtual. And so... just so you know... just a little heads up. I am going to go ahead and pair more experienced senators with our brand new senators. And so, if you... I'm just giving an opt-down option here. So, I'm just going to go ahead and pair you... but if you really don't want to be a mentor for someone, you're experienced, but you just really are not interested in that sort of a relationship with the new person. Let me know... and then, I won't... I won't include you, and pair you with somebody. Otherwise, for those of you who have been on the Senate for a while... do expect to be paired with one of our new people? And let's see... I also sent... I figured... you know... the beginning of the semester is a great time for sort of refreshers... reminders about how things work. Sometimes senators come in and maybe you've been serving a while, but there's still things you're not really all that clear about. So, I did actually send another email today... to senators who are in their midterms... right? So, remember that we do... half the division, we elect one year... and then the next year, we elect the other half. And so, we've got people in the Sciences, for example, and Math... that are in their second year as senator. So, I did go ahead and send an email that's kind of a little bit tweaked, to everybody there, too... it's sort of... kind of... some reminders about things, like... you know... what's on an agenda and those kinds of things. What those sorts of things means... like, what is an executive session? Those kinds of things... as reminders... so, I hope that was helpful to you as well. And then I also wanted to link on the agenda... the shared Google folder... just in case you were not aware that as a senator you have access to a shared faculty senate, Google folder. And so, for example, in that folder, you'll see things like Robert's Rules, which is a nice reminder of the the sort of behavioral procedures that we follow at the senate... as well as all our old meeting minutes, and just some other useful information... all the old agendas, elections information, all of that. So, yeah... so, save that... make sure you've got a a link to that. Another thing that really I want to make sure we do this year, that's been a bit of a long time coming is... we really need to update our charter... the language is out of date, and it doesn't align with the way our Senate is even structured right now. Even some of the officer role descriptions need some revision... and those sorts of things. And so, this semester, I will definitely be putting together a committee to revise that. And so, if you're interested, I'll go ahead and just give anyone a minute here... I'll kind of look in the chat. If you would like to be a part of that committee and help with the updating of the charter. Let me know, and you can let me know right now or you can email me. So, I'll just pause for a second... anybody interested? And then, the best people to serve, definitely officers, will be involved... but also, those of you who have been faculty senators for a long time would be really useful to have you on this committee to help us align the charter with our current practices... and so, it doesn't need to be a big committee, I'm hoping to have at least, maybe 5 people... great... to help with that. So, it looks like I've got... okay. And now I see someone named Bever, but who is Bever? [laughs] ---Bev Everson: I think that's... that's me, Bev Everson. ---Brooke Anderson: Ah... thank you, Bev. ---Bev Everson: I'm not sure why. ---Brooke Anderson: Okay... Bev Everson... thank you... [laughs] great, thank you. ---Bev Everson: But I don't have really great experience to bring to it, but it would be a good learning experience... ---Brooke Anderson: Sure. ---Bev Everson: especially if I'm gonna be teaching somebody else about the senate. ---Brooke Anderson: Yeah, I hope it's great, thank you... alright... so, I've got April, I've got Bev Everson, and then anyone else Last call... and then obviously you can think about it and get back to me, too... if you're interested. And then I see it looks like Raymond has a question too... you're asking... how is the election conducted? Who votes? Now... I'm gonna just hold off on that question Raymond, because I'm not sure if you're referring to senator elections or officer elections... because that's the other big item I have for us to talk about today. Since... so, I'll answer that maybe in a minute, unless you wanted to ask more specifically. ---Raymond Ryder: Oh, the senator elections is what I was wondering about. ---Brooke Anderson: Oh, the senator elections... yeah... so, those are in the spring, ---Raymond Ryder: [unintelligible] ---Brooke Anderson: Yeah, those are in the spring... and, so... there will be... you'll see sort of the process we go to for officers... it will be similar for senators... and we're going to do that now, and in September. But there'll be a call for nominations... and then, if we have... if we have more nominees than positions, then the divisions themselves elect the senators... but they're... you know we're all stretched so thin... for example, last spring we didn't even have enough people interested in senate seats to fill them, and so we didn't really need to do an election, because it was only... you know... there were 3 seats and 3 people interested... and so then those 3 people get to fill the seats. So it depends... and so that'll be kind of similar... that's a kind of a nice transition actually to the officer roles... because that will that will be kind of a similar thing that will happen with the officer role. So, I've shared a nomination form with everybody... we do this in September, so, I'm asking for you to fill out this form pretty quickly if you're interested. Any senator can nominate themselves or another senator to serve as an officer... and we have just as a reminder in our charter... we have descriptions of these roles... and some are at an executive level, which comes with more responsibilities and compensation, and some are at a junior level, which is a smaller role that typically can be sort of handled, pretty much just within the same meeting time as say, a Senate meeting, and those are kinda like getting getting familiar with officer roles, and those are not compensated. But again, these are things that would be really useful to talk about in a charter revision committee, because, we may find that the way that Senate is functioning today, calls for some adjustments to those roles and responsibilities and also possibly the compensation we would want for those roles... so... yeah... so, excellent question. So, if you can let me know if you're interested in... by filling out the form... interested in serving as an officer, or you would think somebody else... another senator... would be really good at serving as an officer. Go ahead and fill that form out... you can always email me and ask questions too... about that, too. And then, I will reach out to... that first week in September... I'll reach out to those who are nominated... or who self-nominate... about the status of that position. If there's more than one person interested in the role, then we usually have, you write up like, a little... a little paragraph about why you're interested in serving as an officer, and that sort of thing... and then that goes into the voting... and only senators vote on the officer positions, and for... we don't have a couple of the officer roles up for election this year, because a couple of them are two-year terms. So, for example... the Governing Board rep Denise Riley... her's is a 2 year term... so, she's in... she's completed her first year, and has one more year in the role. And then the same with Sean Mendoza, who has been such a wonderful adjunct chair for many years. But he's actually in the election cycle where he's serving his fir... he's finished his first year of a 2 year term, from the last election cycle... so, we will... he will be serving for one more year in that role as well. And then remember that, you're elected in the fall... and then, you start serving in the spring, when you're an officer. The other thing that's a time tiny bit confusing, if you're not really familiar with Senate... is the way that the President role works... right. So, I'll just explain that a little bit... and I said this on the form for you, too. So, there's some information you can read over if you're interested in nominating yourself... or someone else for a role. And so, we elect President-elect, and so the President-elect will start in 2023 as President-elect, and then they serve in 2024... the spring is the semester that the the officers start as the President.... right. So, for example, right now Rita is President... but she is also president-elect, which means she will also be President in 2023... right. So, if you are interested in becoming President, then you want to actually nominate yourself for President-elect, and then you get like a year of mentorship, and you serve on the All College Council before you actually take over as President, and our Presidential role is compensated... the most significantly with 6 load hours release time because it's a big job... right. And thank you so much Rita for doing this... and so, there's 6 load hours for the Spring and the Fall semester associated with that, so that you have the time to do the important work that the President needs to do. So, that's a little bit about that... so, President-elect Vice-President... let me see... let me look at the form again. And the ACC rep possibly... are the executive officer roles that are up for election... that would start Spring 2023. The ACC rep only comes into play if we're in a situation like we are now, where Rita is both the President and the President-elect. So, Brandy is serving as our ACC Rep, because Rita is serving in those 2 roles consecutively. So, for example, if our fantastic, wonderful President Rita Lennon wanted to keep her position as the President of the Senate in 2024, she would run for President-elect, and we would then need an ACC rep. And so it's... that's kind of yet to be determined, but I figured I'd go ahead and feel out the interest. So, if you would maybe be interested in being ACC rep... if it's available... please do fill up the form. And then you'll see also... if you're kind of like... yeah, I'm interested in any role... please go ahead and nominate yourself... put your name in the hat... and then I'll talk to you before the September 1st meeting. And see where you're at when it... maybe if there's like 3 or 4 people... maybe you change your mind, or you decide you'd rather go for one role over the other... that kind of thing... okay. And then with the junior officer roles, those are every year... and so, you'll see in the charter, we have a secretary... we have a sergeant of arms... and we have a logistics officer. Sarah is serving as our sergeant of arms and logistics officer this year, and so, that probably should be revised... right... especially in a virtual setting. But again, this is a great thing for us to talk about when we meet as a committee to revise the charter, because we've had that happen several semesters in a row... or years in a row now, where one person serves in those 2 roles. So maybe that really needs to be just one role in our charter... right. And then the secretary role is evolving a little bit too... right... and we debated back and forth whether or not that should be a compensated role... because it doesn't end up being actually kind of a significant amount of work. And so those are the kinds of questions I'd like for us to talk about in that charter committee. So, those are all up for elections... so, if you're interested in just trying out... being a member of the officer team... faculty senate officer team. But you're not ready to dive all the way into a role that has a lot of responsibility at the executive level... you might try out the junior positions. So, I have not been tracking the chat... I don't know if there's any questions or comments, so, I'll pause there for a minute to see if there are. ---Rita Lennon: Carla mentioned that... Brooke... thank you so much for this explanation... extremely helpful I've been taking a look... Tal mentioned that Jeff Sylvan has been taking forever about revising policy on the governance at the college. If we can align that with the charter revamp, then we can have the charter optimally aligned with this college governance policy. So, that's a good idea... yeah... and let's see... I think that was it... yeah... it... yup... yeah. ---Brooke Anderson: Okay... so, I think... I'm looking back at my little notes and my agenda... I think that's it for me. And so... yeah, I will pass it over to, I think, to Makyla now, yeah. ---Rita Lennon: Before Makyla, I would just like to... I just have a little bit of questions about our focus for this year. What should we be focusing on as senate... senates? Listen to me... my brain is definitely a Friday... I guess, at this point... I apologize. What should our focus be this year for Senate? I know those kind of open questions where you're like... well, there's so many different ways that we could take that... if you feel that we could just probably have this conversation maybe more meaningful if I were to put it in a survey... or maybe take it at least to an online... Lisa, I see your hand up... is it to do with what we're talking about now... the focus? ---Lisa Werner: Yes... as opposed to being left up for half the meeting... no, it's... I just raise it. Okay... there was one big, really big thing, that's coming up... and that is the gen-ed revision, which, for some of us... [laughs] after all, the work that was done... especially all those faculty that rewrote their courses under the new guidelines, and it's all being changed again, but so faculty senate is going to, you know... have... you know... I would think a big role in this... and I thought that... so, Michael Parker is putting together a task force. ---Rita Lennon: I'm pretty sure he's here. ---Lisa Werner: If he's here... because I was wondering... was that on the agenda and did I missed it? ---Rita Lennon: It was not placed on this agenda... it was meant ---Lisa Werner: It was meant to be... but, anyway... and I shouldn't just consider... so. ---Rita Lennon: That's okay. ---Lisa Werner: What was that? ---Rita Lennon: No... no worries we're... we're... it's on the agenda for September, because that way we have more time to talk about it and present. ---Lisa Werner: Oh... okay. ---Rita Lennon: But since Michael is here... or, if Michael is here... would you like to say anything about that? You are here. ---Michael Parker: Yeah... so, I spoke to Lisa about those like, you know, like... I mentioned the venues that... I've spoken about this ADAC Redesign. We've got a standing general education committee that reviews course outlines, and that determines whether the courses fit within the criteria that they've established. given the amount of work... and too, following the advice of everything that I've seen about this... I want to form a task force that is devoted just to the revision of the gen-ed curriculum... that that's a separate sort of task... the gen-ed standing committee will be doing that work there. I've spoken to Rita... and I bumped into her at the lunch line today, and said... I want to get together and talk about how exactly we do that... I want to do it through senate... the recruitment of the people. Not that there will be senators exclusively on it, though there certainly could be... and not that the people who are also serving on the Gen-Ed Standing Committee... if they want to join this task force, they could do that as well. So... yeah... and I've also asked as we go through this process to have it as a standing item on faculty senate that we come in and we bring updates. We communicate all of the sort of things that we're thinking throughout the process. So... yep... task force, 8 to 10 people... the core group of people who are going to be really doing the kind of... reviewing the literature... studying our data... all of that kind of thing... making recommendations. And then, from that there would be different subcommittees for things like curriculum, for assessment, for pedagogy... all of that different stuff. So, it will be... and I've said this to other people... that we'll pose the questions... I'll pose the questions... based upon what we're... on the one hand, what we're... what we need to do in terms within the statewide framework, but I expect the faculty to answer the questions... this is going to be a... you know... It has to be... we have to... in the Chancellor's presentation this morning he talked about innovation... leveraging the resources. Well, all of the factory are our resources... we've got natural scientists, social scientists, humanists, everybody, writers, mathematicians. So, we need your expertise on how we make this the best general education program that we can. And we'll be enlisting your help through that... that'll be the main group... 8 to 10... small group to work with... collect feedback, and then there will be opportunities to do... you know, contribute to other parts of it as we look at those different elements of what makes for a robust, effective general education program that will prepare students to solve the problems they're going to face in life... in work... wherever it happens to be. ---Rita Lennon: Thank you Michael... I am gonna stop with my part about focusing... and Denise, I see your hand is up, but I do want to give Makyla the time that she deserves, since we modified the agenda for this presentation... so, please go ahead. ---Makyla Hays: Thanks... so, for those of you that don't know, I'm Makyla Hayes... I'm your PCCEA president... and you've probably gotten some emails from me, and if you haven't, you will at some point... from faculty. We just had a... the big classroom comp and pay scale implementation... went over this last summer. So, as you're returning... you've gotten new contracts, and I know that some of you were able to attend some of the sessions that HR did explaining what was going on... but I know I've also gotten a lot of questions about those. So, I would encourage you to take a look at your emails that I've sent you... I've sent a couple of big ones. Search for my email... it might be easier to just do mmhayes... or my first name will probably bring up the exact emails that I'm talking about. But just so... a quick summary... the Board voted on the new schedules on June 8th... and there have been several conversations in July with administration, your... there's 11 full time representatives other than administrators on the AERC, that put in a grievance about the process... and following AP 1.2501... we heard back... I just sent you this email yesterday... but we did hear back. The ODR is not going to be looking into the grievance... they said it should have happened by April... so, it's past 30 days, and they're saying that there are no obvious negative impacts from not following the policy. So, it is not grievable... so, we are talking with HR... and we're talking through AERC... and that is our recourse at the moment. We're... we've asked for things... I've sent you this email... we've asked for things at 3 separate meetings in July, and have not yet received any of them. So, we are meeting again this coming Friday for AERC to talk more about how to move forward... and hopefully, we have that information at that time. But this goes right along with what Rita was saying about shared governance, and being, not just at the table, but actually like, participating in the meal... and and being part of it. The right people... so, there was a faculty sharing committee and a staff steering committee... but those were not elected people. Those were people that put in their names, and HR selected. Yes, there were AERC representatives... they were not chosen by the AERC... they were not charged with being the representatives for the AERC and for their group... and the AERC, as their elected representatives. And so, that is... that's our concern... we just wanna make sure that going forward that the shared governance roles are clear... they're defined... and we don't end up in a situation again, and we need to correct some of the concerns that we're having. Honestly faculty, we're in a pretty decent spot with our schedule, to be able to move forward. We have clear objective placement criteria... whether or not we agree with them. We have ways that we're planning on moving up... there's been a commitment to try to move us one step a year. We are included in the tier system for adjunct faculty... our staff are really struggling to figure out their placement system... and those are the things that we're kind of working on in AERC. So, check my emails... check for my emails... if you haven't gotten them, send me an email, and I will forward them to you. but we are doing the best that we can to represent your interests to the groups that we're in. So, I think... is there any questions about anything I just kind of... bleah... threw it to you... I threw a lot of information. [laughing] ---Rita Lennon: I know I have my hand up... and yet, I'm the host... so, that's awkward. [laughing] So, my question is... HR... what I heard you say was that HR said that... because, the grievances should have been put in by April? ---Makyla Hays: So ODR... it was the Office of Dispute Resolution that took in the grievance. So that the AP requires that Meet and Confer be started... be done by April... or started in April... and because we did not file within 30 days of that, that we are beyond the window of time to be able to put in agreement for that issue. Makyla...you don't know the Board didn't approve this until the summer? 0:58:20.000,0:58:23.833 They didn't approve our Class and Comp until the summer. 0:58:23.833,0:58:31.295 I definitely put that back in a response to ODR letting them know we've been working to trying to get this good. 0:58:31.295,0:58:37.196 And it wasn't until the Board vote that that was finalized, that it was put in place. 0:58:37.196,0:58:40.550 And so, that was the date that we were starting to count by... 0:58:40.550,0:58:46.707 but that is not... that did not change their mind... they are not considering it. ---Rita Lennon: I hope that everybody here on this call understands what that means... that has retarded our ability to do anything about... if you don't feel like you're getting paid the amount that you... that you're at the step that you should be ODR has now taken that away from you, and I think that this is now on a recorded meeting... the meeting minutes will be... you know... are also recorded. So, I do think that if you have a problem with this, that you definitely raise this as a concern... thank you... Aubrey. ---Aubrey Conover: Hi... sorry... I'm on my iPad here. So, one thing that I feel like I need to mention, and I understand the ODR issue, and I'm gonna separate from it slightly here... is that... in the grievance there were 5 requests for resolution, and 4 of them we are actively working to address, to come to resolution. So, I just want people... one of the things that the ODR said was that they wanted AERC to continue to work on resolutions for these issues. And so, we are actively working on those 4... the 5th, we're going to talk about it the next meeting... it was a request for a letter from the Chancellor to state that certain policies weren't followed... and we'll talk through that. But I just want people to understand that we are committed in AERC to identifying the problems and working through them. In those 4 areas that were requested... we're committed to working through those... getting answers... getting resolutions... and moving them forward. So, I want people to understand that we are... even if the grievance is not being accepted through ODR... and we can talk about that separately... we are committed to answering the questions, and trying to find resolutions... on the resolutions that were requested. So, I don't want people to think that we are not trying to actively solve some problems... so, that's all I got. ---Makyla Hays: Thank you Aubrey... yes, there's a list that we're gonna be going through, and hopefully we can start updating a little bit more on what that process will look like soon. And we just wanna make sure that people know where we... where we've gotten so far, and what we're doing next. And so Friday the 26 is our next AERC meeting... and we're gonna be discussing those things. So, that was... that was in my email as well... an invitation to them. Sorry, Kate, I don't know if I'm supposed to call on you or Rita... so... ---Kate Schmidt: That's okay... I just wanna make sure... ---Rita Lennon: [laughing] Sorry Kat... ---Kate Schmidt: I think Rita said that... what I heard Rita say was that... something about individual being able to appeal... individuals can still appeal. ---Rita Lennon: Okay. ---Kate Schmidt: Appeals are still being accepted... and they extended the deadline... it was mid August, and I think it's mid September now. ---Rita Lennon: Okay, thank you for that clarification. ---Kate Schmidt: That was completely separate from the ODR... that... individual... that system has been in place since they rolled out Class Comp... the appeal system.. through HR... ODR was a grievance that was filed through this AERC member as Makyla described. ---Rita Lennon: Okay... thank you for that clarification. Any other questions or comments... and I... we're 5 minutes past time... so, if you do need to go, I understand. But I... if you do have a question or or comment, and we're all here... please go ahead and ask it. Makyla... thank you for that... okay... so what I will do is... I'm sorry... you put your... you opened your mic... but then, okay. What I'm gonna do for senators... I am going to send out 2 separate emails... one is asking for requests for any academic matter... focus... that senate should be working on this semester. We will... I will also be presenting next meeting about what we worked on last Semester and the semester before that... and then where we are in the processes of all those different things... so, that's coming. And the other thing that I will send out is an email with the May meeting minutes, so that we can vote and approve them via email. One thing that we did not get to get to this meeting... I know It's such a short meeting... is committee work. Ana Jimenez had... she needs one more faculty member who will work with her on the committee that is rebranding the Aztec logo. So, if you would like to... I'm looking at all of you... so, it doesn't have to be a senator, it can be any faculty member. So, if you are here just as a guest... if you are a faculty member... part time, full time, whatever... and you are interested in working with Ana Jimenez on this committee... it's not just a committee of 1... it's... you know... there's multiple people on this committee... but if you're interested in being the 2nd faculty member, please let me know, or you can reach out to Ana herself... Ana Jimenez. Brandy, you have a... you have your hand up. ---Randolph Wright: You know, I was really trying not to have to talk today, but I believe that was part of our thing with ACC... was looking at the rebranding and the naming... I know it's been 4 months since we talked about that, but, if Ana doesn't mind getting together with me, I would love to work with her on that, and then bring that information to the Council... and that is all I'm going to say today, cause my throat is killing me. ---Rita Lennon: Yeah... wow... I hope you feel better soon... I didn't know you were under the weather. ---Randolph Wright: Yeah, thank you. ---Rita Lennon: Ana... you can find Brandy at Wright Randolph... I'm trying to ruin your name... sorry. Okay, so thank you so much for that... and alright... well, it looks like we're at the end of the time. There doesn't seem to be any more questions or comments coming through... and I hope everybody has a wonderful semester. But, before we can officially close our meeting, we have to hear a few words from a few people, and I never tell you what those words are... you have to know what they are. ---Rita Lennon: A motion, people. ---Dolores Duran-Cerda: I motion to adjourn... ---Rita Lennon: A motion to adjourn, yes... [laughing] it's not a quiz... I'm sorry. Okay... so, there is a motion now to... to adjourn... okay, there's lots of them... wonderful... okay, session is over. Thank you so much everyone... have a great start to your semester next week.
