HLC update to faculty

Communication sent to all faculty on May 16, 2013 by Provost Jerry Migler with an update on activities related to the Institutional Self-Study and monitoring report.

Dear Colleagues,

A recent announcement was sent to all PCC faculty, staff and administration regarding the planning that is underway for the HLC Institutional Self-Study.  This announcement was also posted on our website for external audiences.  A similar letter was also sent to our students.

With the summer rapidly approaching, we wanted to provide additional information to all faculty regarding next steps.

HLC Information Updates

  • Updates regarding progress on the Monitoring Report and the Institutional Self-Study will be e-mailed and/or posted on the College’s “Pima Addresses Probation” webpage

Summer Activities

  • Due to the aggressive timelines imposed by the HLC for completing our Monitoring Report and Institutional Self-Study, we must continue to work on these projects over the summer.  A meeting was held with Faculty Senate Leadership on Wednesday, May 16 to discuss concerns related to the Self-Study planning and especially to the implementation of committee teams during the summer.
  • As you know, the Monitoring Report is due August 1, 2013 and the Institutional Self-Study is due July, 2014.
  • We anticipate that key committees for the Institutional Self-Study will conduct organizational and planning activities throughout the summer, with their primary work conducted during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Lead Writer

  • An announcement will be posted on Friday, May 17th for a faculty member to serve as the lead writer for the Institutional Self-Study.  The announcement will close on May 28th.  Watch for an email with more details.
  • There is also a faculty member serving as lead writer for the Monitoring Report.  These are two different positions.

Institutional Self-Study Participation

  • Please look for an email announcement that will be forthcoming with detailed information regarding the various committees and the process for signing up to participate.
  • Faculty members will have the opportunity to sign up now and participate during the summer and be reimbursed for their work off-contract.
  • Faculty members will also have the opportunity to sign up now and participate in the Self-Study beginning next fall.  An announcement for faculty participation will be re-sent at the beginning of the fall semester.

SENSE Survey

  • To assist in gathering data needed to address HLC Criterion 4.C.1, the College will be administering the Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE) to new students next fall.  The Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE) is part of the Center for Community College Student Engagement and the Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin.
  • The survey will be administered during the fourth and fifth class weeks of the fall academic term in classes randomly selected by the Center to ensure a representative sample and to preserve the integrity of the survey results. Instructors whose classes are selected for survey administration will receive further information from the institution’s designated Campus Contact.
  • To learn more about SENSE visit, or contact the Center for Community College Student Engagement at 512-471-6807 or
