Take the GED test

PCC offers you a simple step-by-step process for taking the GED test and getting you on the road to higher education or a better job.

Step 1: Attend Orientation

Attend GED 101 (orientation) and/or take the GED Official Practice Test (OPT). Call 520-206-3987 for more information on the GED 101 orientation.

Official Practice Test (OPT)

  • Call the GED Hotline at 520-206-6GED (6433) for the nearest location to take the OPT.
  • PCC Adult Education gives the OPT at all of our locations free of charge. The OPT is used to determine your readiness to take the official GED Exam.

Step 2: Register for Exam

  • Refer to the registration section for instructions.
  • Schedule your exam appointments.

Step 3: Take the Exam

Arrive on time for your scheduled exam appointment.

Before the GED Test Starts

Leave non-essential items at home. We will provide you with everything you need to take the exam.

  • Be sure you feel well enough to stay in the testing room for the entire time allowed.
  • Use the restroom, and eat and drink enough to sustain you.
  • No food, sodas, coffee or drinks other than water will be allowed. You will be allowed to have a sealable or closable bottle of water (no cups) in the test room.
  • Do NOT bring cell phones or any electronic devices into the testing room. If you violate this policy, your test results will be voided and all your appointments for the day will be cancelled.
  • Be prompt! At the scheduled time, a test center representative will examine your photo identification, check for your name on the appointment list and let you into the examination room. Latecomers will miss the exam.
  • You must present your photo ID when you first arrive and each time you return to the testing room.

During the GED Test

  • The examiner will give you testing materials.
  • Listen carefully to directions.
  • Work carefully and quietly.
  • The GED is a timed test. Time limits will be posted.
  • When you finish raise your hand. The examiner will come to collect your materials.
  • When the testing time is up the examiner will tell you to stop and will come to pick up your materials.
  • If you do not stop when time is called, the test will be invalidated and you will have to wait 30 days to retest on that subject.
  • In the case of a safety emergency, such as a fire, leave all materials on the table and leave the room.
  • Do not write on test booklets. There is a $200 damage fee.

After the Test

  • As soon as your materials are checked in, the examiner will ask you to leave the testing room quietly and tell you when to return for the next session.
  • Scores should be available online within seven business days at the web address you were given during registration.
