Free public lecture: Solstice Markers at Monte Alban, Oaxaca, Mexico

Enjoy a thought-provoking presentation by Donna Gifford, Vice President of Online Development and Instruction, at the first Speakers’ Series scheduled this fall semester.
Gifford will discuss the solar movement and archeoastronomy in Mesoamerica. Major and minor Zapotec ruins in the Oaxacan region of southern Mexico show the sophisticated astronomical knowledge of this pre-Columbian civilization. She also will show slides of her research trip to verify summer solstice markers in Monte Albán ans other sites.

Gifford has an M.S. in Astronomy from The University of Arizona and taught astronomy at Pima from 1999 to 2006. She has taught junior high science, math and science teaching methodology, and also has been an instructional technology coordinator.
