Tucson, AZ -- Pima Community College Theatre Arts presents the taut, intense thriller "Wait Until Dark" by Frederick Knott. Directed by Dr. Frank Pickard in the intimate, Black Box Theatre, the production draws the audience into the action like a neighbor peeking through the window.
A blind Greenwich Village woman becomes the target of a sinister, psychotic killer and two ex-convicts searching for heroin hidden within a doll given to the woman by her husband. The scenes moves swiftly from one moment of suspense to another building the tension up to almost unbearable levels toward a terrifying, breath-stopping climactic finish. When the lights go out, the game of survival begins.
A film-noir quality is achieved with hazy lighting and the intricate set of a three-room, walk-down city apartment, designed by Todd Poelstra. Shafts of light piercing the darkness emphasize the contrasting study of blind and sighted. Music and sound effects heighten the edgy, ominous feeling of dread.
Though director Pickard applies some updates from the original 1966 Broadway production and casts a female as the lead con, the production remains every bit as terrifying. He comments,"This is a very different type of theatre for Pima. The audience is taken on an exciting, thrilling ride enhanced by the closeness of the Black Box Theatre, where the action at times is only inches from them."
