PCC Faculty Member Discusses Astronomy in Pre-Columbian Mexico

Tucson, AZ -- The sophisticated astronomical knowledge of the inhabitants of pre-Columbian Mexico will be the focus of a thought-provoking discussion this evening at Pima Community College.

Donna Gifford, Vice President of Online Development and Instruction, will discuss archeoastronomy in Mesoamerica, specifically the Zapotec ruins in the Oaxacan region of southern Mexico.

Gifford, who holds an M.S. in Astronomy from The University of Arizona and has taught astronomy at Pima, will show slides of her research trip to verify summer solstice markers in Monte Alban and other sites.

Gifford's discussion is the first in the fall Speakers' Series, a regular series of talks aimed at showcasing the expertise and accomplishments of College faculty and staff.

The next Speakers' Series presentation will be held on Nov. 13 when Kimlisa Salazar, gives a presentation on women, advertising and shifting images in the 1920s
