National Program Aimed at Helping Veterans, Service Members and Their Families Make Wise Education Choices
Tucson, AZ -- Pima Community College is kicking off its Fall 2012 semester by joining a national program designed to ensure that military veterans, service members and their families receive high-quality academic advising as well as the best information about the cost of attending college.
The Principles of Excellence Program is spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and includes more than 60 higher-education institutions in Arizona.
"We are honored to be part of this national effort," said Interim Chancellor Dr. Suzanne L. Miles. "PCC is committed to giving veterans and their families the tools they need to succeed educationally. We have always strived to provide accurate, comprehensive information so that students can make the best-possible use of their hard-earned military benefits."
By agreeing to adhere to the VA's Principles of Excellence, PCC will provide prospective students with personalized information regarding the total cost of PCC programs, the amount of that cost to be covered by federal educational benefits, and their estimated debt upon graduation. PCC also will provide information about student outcomes and financial aid to allow prospective students to compare educational institutions and make informed choices.
Nearly 1,400 veterans enroll at PCC each semester, and the school has been designated one of the country's "military friendly schools" by www.gijobs.com. In November 2011, PCC dedicated a new Veterans Center at its Downtown Campus, which is home to one of several thriving student veterans clubs.
In April, President Obama signed an executive order directing the federal government to establish the Principles of Excellence.
The fall 2012 semester at PCC began today. The College is offering nearly 1,300 classes in 76 programs.
