Bombardier Aerospace Sponsors Three PCC Aviation Technology Scholarships
June 25, 2012
Tucson, AZ – Bombardier Aerospace has agreed to sponsor three $1,000 scholarships for Pima Community College Aviation Technology students.
“Bombardier is proud to support the next generation of skilled technicians that will provide service to the operators of aircraft worldwide,” said Stan Younger, Vice President, Bombardier Aircraft Service Centers. “By sponsoring the scholarships, we are able to develop relationships within the community and foster excellence in our profession which will enable us to attract these individuals to our service centers.”
Announcement of the scholarships was welcomed by Ted A. Roush, Vice President of Instruction at PCC’s Desert Vista Campus, home campus for the Aviation Technology Program.
“Scholarships from industry partners like Bombardier are crucial to these students and often make the difference between success and failure.” Roush said. “We are so thankful to Bombardier for its continuing support of the PCC Aviation Program and our students. It’s a great partnership!”
The Bombardier scholarships will be for three students: Two in PCC’s Airframe and Powerplant concentration and one in the Avionics concentration. To be eligible, the applicant must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher and demonstrate financial need. The applicant also must submit an essay on either the aviation industry or a person or persons who shaped the industry. A committee of at least three people from the Aviation Technology faculty and staff will select the scholarship recipients. Other application details are being finalized.
PCC’s intensive Aviation Technology Program requires some students to take more than two years to complete all their requirements. As a result, students often exhaust their financial aid entitlements before they have completed their entire program of study. In addition, most students cannot work full-time and complete their programs on time.
About PCC’s Aviation Technology Program
PCC’s Aviation Technology Program is highly regarded in the aerospace industry. A recent story in Inside Tucson Business called “one of the best kept secrets among many in the Tucson region. A number of veterans are among its students, as discussed in a story that appeared in the Arizona Daily Star.
The program offers certificate and degree opportunities in Airframe and Powerplant, Avionics, and Structural Repair concentrations. Most Aviation Technology Program students combine at least two concentrations. Students develop their skills at PCC’s Aviation Technology Center at Tucson International Airport. The ATC includes a 26,000 square-foot hangar, where students work on a variety of aircraft models, from single-engine Piper and Cessna airplanes to Boeing 727 jets.
About the PCC Foundation
The PCC Foundation, which was established in 1977, secures and manages private philanthropic support for Pima Community College. Annually, the Foundation awards nearly $1 million in scholarships to more than 1,600 PCC students.
