PCC to Strengthen Processes Regarding Workplace Conduct
April 20, 2012
Tucson, AZ – Interim Chancellor Dr. Suzanne Miles today announced a series of measures aimed at ensuring professional behavior by the employees of Pima Community College.
“Pima Community College is one of southern Arizona’s largest employers,” Dr. Miles wrote in an email sent today to all faculty and staff. “I want to make sure Pima also is one of the best employers in southern Arizona. That means providing a workplace in which every member of the Pima family is treated with dignity, respect and fairness.”
Dr. Miles outlined three specific steps that PCC will take to prevent and respond to instances of employees mistreating one another:
- Exploring the addition of an external avenue for employees to report complaints of improper conduct that operates apart from any College administrator;
- Strengthening internal processes regarding the prevention, detection and reporting of unprofessional conduct; and
- Launching new training sessions to define and identify improper behavior, help employees become better acquainted with internal disciplinary processes and familiarize them with existing resources to support them if they have a complaint.
Dr. Miles said PCC’s Human Resources Department has made great strides recently to foster an atmosphere of collegiality and mutual respect at the College.
“My goal is to build on those successes,” Dr. Miles wrote in her email. “The College does everything it can to assure that no PCC employee mistreats another employee. Our workplace must be absolutely free of improper conduct.”
Dr. Miles also stressed the importance of making sure that the legal rights of all employees are respected and that the College deals fairly with employee matters.
"Our employee groups have stressed that PCC must do everything it can to ensure our employees have access to due process that is robust and balanced,” she wrote. “In this matter the PCC administration concurs completely.”
Dr. Miles assumed the Interim Chancellor post on Feb. 29. On March 6, she announced plans for greater transparency at PCC, including a requirement that all employees who receive offensive communications from anyone doing business with the College to contact the supervisor.
