Japanese Consulate-General Official at 10th Annual Japanese Speech Contest, April 21
April 18, 2012
Tucson, AZ – To mark the 10th anniversary of the Tucson Japanese Speech Contest, Consul Deputy Director Kumiko Nakamura of the Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles, will give opening remarks at the event Saturday, April 21, 2012.
The event, noon to 5 p.m., at East Campus, 8181 E. Irvington Road, is free and open to the public. The Tucson Japanese Speech Contest features exhibits, performances and student speech competitions. In recognizing its origins, the event returns to East Campus, where the first event was held in 2003. The event is held at a different PCC campus each year.
It is organized by PCC East Campus Student Life and the Tucson Japanese Speech Contest Committee of the Southern Arizona Association for Japanese Education (www.saaje.org). For the complete schedule, click on the Tucson Japanese Speech Contest link at the top of the page.
The event has changed over the decades, since the Southern Arizona Speech Contest in 1990, which incidentally was held at East Campus. In 1994, the event’s name was changed to the Arizona Statewide Japanese Speech Contest and administration was given over to Arizona Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ).
On 2003, the first Tucson Japanese Speech Contest, administered by the Tucson Japanese Speech Contest Committee, was held at East Campus. It has a completely different mission statement, rules and administration from its predecessors.
