PCC Faculty Member Builds Hope for Families Around the World

March 2, 2012

Tucson, AZ -- A member of Pima Community College’s mathematics faculty will discuss her work with Habitat for Humanity International in an upcoming talk that is part of the College’s Speakers’ Series.

Anne Franklin’s presentation will focus on building projects she has been involved with in three African countries.  The event is free and open to the public.

Franklin’s first overseas Habitat build was in Zambia in south-central Africa, where she and a group of intrepid volunteers lived and worked in a small village near an area known as the copper belt.  A year later, Franklin traveled to western Kenya, very close to the Uganda border.  And last year, she led a team of 14 to Lilongwe, Malawi, a small country in south-central Africa.  Franklin will lead a team to rural Nepal this summer.

Franklin has taught mathematics for more than 20 years at PCC, as well as occasional French and honors classes.  She was the mathematics department chair for four years and is now the chair of the science department at the Downtown Campus.

The lecture begins at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, at the PCC District Office, Community Board Room (Building C), 4905 E. Broadway Blvd.  The Speakers’ Series, now is its second year, showcases the expertise and accomplishments of PCC’s faculty to the community.

The next Speakers’ Series presentation will be held at 6 p.m., April 3.  Michael Stack, a member of PCC’s art faculty, will give a presentation on visual art in its seemingly infinite varieties.
