Interim Chancellor Miles Welcomes Congressman Grijalva’s Support for Adult Education
March 22, 2012
Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College Interim Chancellor Dr. Suzanne Miles is praising U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva for his support for adult education.
In a letter sent this week to the Arizona lawmaker, Dr. Miles thanks Rep. Grijalva for his effort to acquire federal funding for adult education programs.
“PCC is grateful for your tireless efforts to ensure that Adult Education programs in Pima County and across the United States can help students achieve their dreams,” she wrote.
Dr. Miles notes that more than 4,000 students are now enrolled in PCC’s adult education programs and, while they range in age from 16 to 86, they are “united by a belief in the transformative power of learning.”
Rep. Grijalva is among more than 30 members of Congress urging the House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies to provide adequate funding for adult education programs.
“Literacy skills are absolutely essential for success in the 21st century economy,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to the subcommittee’s Republican and Democratic leaders. “A focus of adult education can also save money for government at all levels by reducing societal healthcare, public assistance and incarceration costs.”
