PCC's Festival of Democracy Jan. 7, 2012

December 15, 2011

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College will hold a Festival of Democracy on Jan. 7, 2012. The event is one of many being held by organizations throughout the city to mark the first anniversary of Jan. 8, 2011.

The Festival of Democracy will be held from 8 a.m.-noon at West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road. It is free.

“At the core of Congresswoman Giffords’ ‘Congress on Your Corner’ event Jan. 8 was the exercise of fundamental American rights: to assemble, to petition one’s representatives, and to speak freely,” Pima Community College Chancellor Dr. Roy Flores says. “The festival celebrates the unique strengths of our form of government.”

The festival features Constitution Corner, where participants may recite portions of the U.S. Constitution and other historic documents, and may register to vote. Also, there will be a mass sing-along of patriotic songs, with participants receiving a free commemorative T-shirt.

Other events include a 5K race and fun run/walks of shorter distances, a health fair, yoga and tai chi activities, presentations by public safety and emergency services personnel, and a paint-a-tile public art activity.

Food and beverages will be for sale, with proceeds going to PCC’s Gabe Zimmerman Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The Festival of Democracy is one of many events being held on Jan. 7 under the auspices of BEYOND. To learn about BEYOND and the other events, visit www.beyond-tucson.org.
