PCC Board Honors 12 at Recognition Celebration

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College Board of Governors honored 12 individuals at its Recognition Celebration at Wednesday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

The 12 comprise PCC employees, students and community members who received an award or recognition from organizations outside PCC over the past year.

Ten employees were recognized: (Listed in alphabetical order.)

1. Antonio Arroyo: Special Recognition Award from the Hispanic Professional Action Committee

2. Dr. Lonnie Burke: 2011 College Educator Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Southern Arizona Region of the American Chemical Society in appreciation of his dedication to teaching future scientists

3. Dr. Ricardo Castro-Salazar: Council member for the Institute of Mexicans Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Mexico for 2012-2014

4. Mario Diaz de Sandy: Chef of the Year from the local chapter of the American Culinary Federation, the Chef’s Association of Southern Arizona

5. Shannon McBride-Olson: Certificate of Appreciation and Recognition from the City of Tucson mayor’s office for eight years of service as a board member of the City of Tucson Planning Commission

6. Keith McIntosh: 2011 EDUCAUSE Rising Star Award for advancing operational performance and demonstrating exceptional early-career leadership in higher education Information Technology

7. Bryce Morthland: Silver National Paragon Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations for the 2010 College Calendar

8. Dr. Mark Nelson: Arizona Music Education Association’s Excellence in Music Administration Award

9. David J. Raymond: Master Instructor designation specializing in Aeronautical Science by the National Center for Aerospace & Transportation Technologies

10. Trisha Silva, Who’s Who Among Students in American Community Colleges for 2010-2011

One student was recognized: Abel Moreno, named 2011 Arizona Daily Star 40 Under 40 Man of the Year. A military veteran, Moreno is co-founder and executive director of Vets4Vets, a Tucson-based nonprofit which provides peer support and trains peer counselors nationwide to help the new generation of vets.

One community member was recognized: Richard Foster, who has been instrumental in forming partnerships with Pima Community College that provide a variety of professional certification and training opportunities, such as Structured English Immersion and the Middle School endorsement for Tucson Unified School District teachers.

The next scheduled meeting of the Board is Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Room A109-112 of the Community Campus, 401 N. Bonita Ave.
