Call to Artists for Sculpture-On-Campus 2012

October 5, 2011

Tucson, AZ – The Call to Artists is underway for the fourth installment of Pima Community College’s Sculpture-On-Campus project.

Since the project had its first installations in 2004, a total of 19 sculptures have been displayed throughout East Campus, 8181 E. Irvington Road.

“Sculpture-on-Campus has been so vital to how the college connects with the community,” said Mike Stack, an Art Faculty member since 2002, who helps coordinate the project. “At the start of every semester you can see that lone new student addressing each sculpture almost as a way to prepare for the challenges that lay ahead, or students cramming for a mid-term under the shadow of a sculpture as if it was a sentinel for learning, or that father, who instead of waiting in his car to pick up his wife after class, brings their son or daughter onto  campus a few minutes early so they can interact with the sculptures together.

“These examples and many more help explain the importance of Sculpture-On-Campus and how it not only connects artists to students and the whole college community, but also how it reaches into the future.”

Stack noted that works are chosen to inspire the kind of creative thinking that is essential for any academic institution. The result is a transformation of the campus into a unique public exhibition space.

Among the works now on display is a 10-foot high welded aluminum sculpture called “The Veteran,” depicting an ascending winged man, symbolizing the recuperative process war veterans go through upon their return home after violent conflict. Artist Lori Andersen purposely placed her sculpture in the quiet courtyard across from the East Campus Bookstore.

The deadline to submit an application for Sculpture-On-Campus 2012 is 4:45 pm., Dec. 16, 2011. Selections will be announced in early 2012.

Artists commit to a minimum time that their work will be displayed, but many leave the works much longer. More information on placement, installation and the application process, as well as the brochure from the third installment, see the links below:

An opening reception is planned for Oct. 10, 2012.
