PCC Presents Swashbuckling Family Adventure 'Treasure Island'

September 6, 2011

Tucson, AZ - Pima Community College Theatre Arts launches the 2011-2012 Season with the classic pirate adventure, Treasure Island by Ara Watson, from the book by Robert Louis Stevenson. Directed by Mickey Nugent. Public performances run September 23 through October 2 in the Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre (Fri. and Sat. at 7 p.m.; Sat. and Sun. at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters are available September 30. Tickets are $6.

A boy, a stolen map, a deserted island, a buried treasure and lots of PIRATES—the perfect elements for a tale that has captivated the young and old ever since Stevenson began penning this coming-of-age saga for the Scottish children’s magazine Young Folks in 1881. His book, published in 1883, introduced the world to all the familiar pirate myths we know and love today—one legged seamen with eye patches, shoulder-riding parrots, sword fights, treasure maps with the black X marking the spot, schooners flying the jolly roger, buried gold on tropical islands and the infamous Long John Silver. Cleverly adapted by Watson and artfully directed by Nugent, this thrilling family production comes to life onstage amidst Todd Poelstra’s imaginative set complete with a rustic inn, two ships, a dense island jungle with cliffs and a volcano! It’s the largest set ever built by Pima for its children’s production. Intricate and colorful costumes, designed by the talented Maryann Trombino, complete the transformation and illusion. “As a young boy I always loved this story and would dream of pirates and treasure. Now I get to bring it alive onstage. So come join Jim Hawkins, Billy Bones, Captain Smollett and Ben Gunn on an amazing journey, all seen through a young man's eyes. In the words of Long John Silver ‘Them that'll die will be the lucky ones.’ Arrrrgh!” remarked director Nugent.

The Pima Community College Center for the Arts is located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson (just west of downtown). For ticket information contact the box office at 206-6986 or centerforthearts@pima.edu
