PCC Hosts Lecture by Award-winning Dancer

Tucson, AZ – Pima Community College’s acclaimed Speakers’ Series kicks off the fall semester with a free lecture by award-winning dancer Aurora Gonçalves-Shaner.

On Tuesday, September 27, Gonçalves-Shaner will share her experiences as a choreographer, performer and dance instructor. She will discuss dance origins and its historical background, including tribal dance, ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, contemporary dance and ballroom dance styles.

Gonçalves-Shaner, a member of PCC’s Art faculty, was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up in Bahia, where she developed her classical ballet and modern dance techniques. She has travelled the world performing as a professional dancer with the Brazilian dance company, Ballet Teatro Castro Alves.

Gonçalves-Shaner holds a B.A. in Dance from Brigham Young University and a M.F.A. in Dance from the University of Arizona.  She has also won titles in national ballroom dance competitions.

PCC’s Speakers’ Series is sponsored by Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for the College, Dr. Suzanne Miles, and PCC Faculty Senate. The series, now in its second year, is aimed at showcasing the expertise and accomplishments of PCC’s faculty to the community.

The next Speakers’ Series presentation will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, October 25.  Amy C. Davis, a member of the counseling faculty, will discuss how the process of storytelling can serve as a powerful medium for learning and overcoming academic, personal and life concerns and issues.
