Pima Community College to Establish Memorial Scholarship

Tucson, AZ –Pima Community College (PCC) will establish a memorial scholarship in memory of those who perished in Saturday’s shooting, it was announced at Tuesday’s regular meeting of the PCC Board of Governors.

The scholarship will be awarded to eligible students who will devote themselves to careers in community or public service.

“Words are inadequate in expressing the sadness that I feel, as surely we all do, following the horrible events of last Saturday,” Board Chair Marty Cortez said at the regular meeting. She offered condolences to the families of the victims and wished for the full recovery of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other survivors.

At its Annual Meeting, the Board elected Ms. Cortez to be its Chair for 2011.

Ms. Cortez has represented District 5 on the PCC Board since being elected in 1994.

Ms. Cortez, a longtime education and community leader, succeeds Board Member Sherryn S. “Vikki” Marshall as chair. Board Chair terms last one year.

In addition, the Board elected District 4 Member Scott Stewart as Secretary for 2011. Mr. Stewart succeeds Ms. Cortez in the position.

Also at the Annual Meeting, Mr. Stewart was sworn in to serve a six-year term. Mr. Stewart was re-elected in 2010.

The next scheduled meeting of the Board will be Wednesday, February 9 at 7 p.m. in the PCC District Office Community/Board Room at 4905 E. Broadway.
