College Receives $2.9 million Grant

August 15, 2008
Pima Community College will receive a $2,869,876 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.  The grant is funded by the Department of Education’s Title V program, as authorized by the federal Higher Education Act of 1965.  The Title V program, “Developing Hispanic Servings Institutions,” helps colleges and universities enhance and expand their capacity to serve Hispanic and low-income students.

Increased familiarity with computers and the Internet means that today’s students can take advantage of new learning resources unavailable even a few years ago.  The new $2.8 million Title V grant awarded to the College’s Downtown Campus will redesign curriculum and instructional delivery to take advantage of new technologies for diverse students.  The grant will also provide new equipment, computers and software, as well as training.   The grant will give the College increased flexibility for delivering classes and skills training to a diverse student population, including working adults.

Pima Community College currently has two Title V grants totaling $5.3 million, originally awarded in 2006.   Those Title V grants so far have funded upgrades in costly health science equipment for training medical professionals at the College’s West Campus and the creation of an Avionics Technology program to expand the Desert Vista Campus’ Aviation program and service the region’s aerospace industry.

Funding for each of the College’s three Title V grants is allocated across the five-year life of each grant.
