Alfonso Avitia Rushes for 305 Yards in Pima Victory

 Tucson, AZ – The Pima football team earned its first win of the season behind running back Alfonso Avitia (Amphitheater HS) and its tenacious defense to beat the Air Force Junior Varsity team 24-12 on Sunday at Kino Stadium. The Aztecs improved to 1-2 on the year.

Avitia rushed for 305 yards on 26 carries. He scored on a 20-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also had runs of 59, 40 and 49 yards in the second half on different possessions.

The Aztecs’ defense forced Air Force to punt on its first five possessions. They also recovered two fumbles and forced three interceptions. Mikell Everette (Kentwood HS), Brandon Perkins (Desert View HS) and Darius Kelly (Buena HS) each had an interception.

Pima got on the board in the second quarter when Quinton Rollerson (Midwestern St. HS) found Cassius Pierce (Westchester HS) for the 18-yard touchdown reception. Later in the quarter, the Aztecs, faced with fourth down situation, used a trick-play which ended with Andrew Fox (Miami Central HS) scoring on a 51-yard reception which made it 14-0 at that point. In the fourth quarter, Adam Valenzuela increased the Aztecs lead when he hit a 22-yard field goal to make it 17-6.
