CLASS SUMMARY
The Information Technology Assistant is the first level of a three level information technology technician series. Incumbents perform entry level duties in assisting with the operation and administration of multiple computer platforms, running computer production processing, the operation and administration of telephone PBX and data network equipment, or the maintenance of personal computers in a client/server environment. The Information Technology Assistant is distinguished from the Information Technology Technician which is responsible for performing semi-skilled technical level work.
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES
These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.
- Assisting in installing, setting up, configuring, testing, and operating a variety of equipment. Daily 40%
- Performing preventive maintenance and simple repairs to equipment. Daily 30%
- Troubleshooting, tracking, and resolving simple problems. Daily 10%
- Assisting in monitoring systems. Daily 10%
- Entering information into databases and/or spreadsheets for tracking purposes. Daily 10%
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. As Required
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
Incumbents assigned to computer operator will be responsible for:
- Running production jobs on all computer platforms;
- Assisting with system back-ups;
- Assisting in the installation, testing, and maintenance of a variety of computer systems hardware and software, including operating systems, utilities, and third party software.
Incumbents assigned to production processing will be responsible for:
- Distributing contracts, reports, and other College listings;
- Assisting in running computer production processing requests;
- Assisting with electronic data transmissions.
Incumbents assigned to network services will be responsible for:
- Assisting in the installation and set-up of telephone equipment;
- Assisting with the set-up of voice mail accounts;
- Providing basic technical assistance and instruction on use of telephones and voice mail to end-users.
Incumbents assigned to client services will be responsible for:
- Assisting with the installation, testing, operation, and maintenance of personal computers in a client/server environment;
- Assisting end-users on the use of hardware and software.
Training and Experience (positions in this class typically require):
High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Degree; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licensing Requirements (positions in this class typically require):

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):
Knowledge of:
- Applicable hardware, software, and peripheral equipment
- Basic computer system or telephone principles
- Basic electronic equipment repair principles
- Customer service principles
- Software licensing principles.
Skills (position requirements at entry):
Skill in:
- Entering information into a database
- Providing customer service
- Troubleshooting problems
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: reaching, pushing, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts and electrical currents.
