HLC liaison, education consultant to visit PCC

This email concerning an upcoming visit by the Higher Learning Commission liaison to Pima Community College and an education consultant was sent by Dr. Jerry Migler, Provost, to employees on April 30, 2013.

Colleagues,

Pima Community College is honored this week to host two highly-regarded experts who will assist us as we prepare our responses to the Higher Learning Commission. They are Dr. Karen Solomon, a Vice President with the Higher Learning Commission and Dr. Cecilia López, with the City Colleges of Chicago.

Dr. Solomon is the HLC’s liaison for Pima.  She will be focused on helping us understand the sanction of probation, the new accreditation criteria, and the role that the Higher Learning Commission plays in assisting a college that has been sanctioned.  Her time with us will be directed at the self-study and other activities we need to complete.

Dr. López is a longtime educator with extensive experience assisting colleges facing challenges similar to those now confronted by Pima. Currently the Associate Vice Chancellor for Accreditation and Assessment for the City Colleges of Chicago, she will offer guidance based on her work with institutions that she has led through similar difficulties.

It is a testament to the willingness of Drs. Solomon and López to assist Pima that they have agreed to participate in two information sessions that will be open to the entire College community. I strongly believe that these sessions will be beneficial and encourage all faculty and staff to attend.

Both information sessions are scheduled for Thursday, May 2. The morning session begins at 9 a.m. in the Amethyst Room at our Downtown Campus and the afternoon session begins at 1 p.m. in the Community Board Room at the District Office.

Each session will be streamed simultaneously to a site at each campus, Maintenance and Security and at the District Office. Attendees at the remote sites will be able to view the session as it is occurring and ask questions via e-mail regarding the self-study and next steps. Video of each session will be posted to the Accreditation page of the College website.

During their visit to Pima, Drs. Solomon and López also will meet with Staff Council, Faculty Senate and the Governing Board. Their complete schedule is below.

In closing, please let me remind you that the first in a series of HLC deadlines is only 13 weeks away. On Aug. 1, we must file a monitoring report. The preparation of that report, and preparing for the deadlines that follow, is the top priority of my office.

Your feedback is encouraged and welcomed.  Please send your questions and/or comments to mamsanchez@pima.edu.

Thank you.
