I. Purpose

The purpose of this standard practice guide is to implement the regulation on assessment of prior learning demonstrated by a Pima Community College student through College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs.

II. Acceptance of College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB)

Pima Community College accepts College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) scores and converts the scores into Pima Community College credits. Tables in the annual catalog define the conversion of CLEP, AP, and IB scores into credits.

The credit conversion is reviewed and recommended by the College Discipline Area Committees responsible for the respective disciplines offered through CLEP, AP, and IB. The recommendations are made to the Chief Academic Officers (CAO) district committee for approval by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Education Services.

CLEP, AP, and IB converted credits may not be earned after the completion of thirty (30) credits at the College.

III. Transferability of College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit

College credits awarded by Pima Community College based on CLEP, AP, and IB examination scores are re-evaluated upon transfer to another institution with one exception. The CLEP, AP, and IB credit included in the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) certified by Pima County Community College District (see Section IV) will not be re-evaluated as general education credits by institutions accepting the AGEC. However, inclusion in the AGEC does not prevent the CLEP, AP, and IB credit from being re-evaluated as it applies to major, minor, elective, and/or other degree requirements.

IV. Application of College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit Towards General Education

CLEP, AP, and IB credit may fulfill Arizona General Education (AGEC) credit and/or Occupational General Education credit if the CLEP, AP, and IB score results in credit for a course in the general education list.

Upon transfer to another institution, CLEP, AP, and IB credit included in an AGEC will not be re-evaluated by an institution accepting the AGEC. All Arizona public universities and Arizona public community colleges accept a Pima County Community College District certified AGEC as fulfilling lower-division general education. The CLEP, AP, and IB credit included in the AGEC will not be re-evaluated as a part of general education, but may be re-evaluated if the credits also apply to more than general education such as major, minor, elective, and/or other degree requirements.

V. Grade Awarded for College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB)

CLEP, AP, and IB examinations resulting in credit are recorded with a P grade and will not be evaluated as a specific course grade. CLEP, AP, and IB scores not resulting in credit are not recorded.
